Stampeders 22, Alouettes 14: Quarterback Kevin Glenn was 22-for-28 in his season debut, throwing for 268 yards and one touchdown as visiting Calgary took advantage of a slumbering Montreal offence.
Glenn, filling in for injured starter Drew Tate, connected with wide receiver Nik Lewis for a 9-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Running back Jon Cornish finished with 90 yards on 18 carries for the Stampeders (2-1), while kicker Rene Paredes made 5-of-5 field goal attempts.
Quarterback Anthony Calvillo completed 22-of-36 passes for 205 yards, finding slotback Arland Bruce five times for 80 yards as Montreal (1-2) again struggled to find a rhythm on offence under new coach Dan Hawkins. Defensive end John Bowman and safety Kyries Hebert each registered two sacks.
Calvillo appeared to make a statement with Montreal’s first drive, completing 7-of-8 passes culminating in a 19-yard touchdown toss to wide receiver Brandon London. However, that was the only offence the Alouettes could generate as Glenn and the Stampeders slowly built a 12-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Montreal’s chances looked grim when Calgary defensive end Demonte’ Bolden forced a fumble by Calvillo with 5:40 remaining, but Alouettes defensive back Ed Gainey blocked a Stampeders punt on the ensuing possession and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown. The special teams points did not spark Calvillo, who was sacked on his next possession and could not will the Alouettes to another first down.
