Stars vs Golden Knights picks and predictions for Sept 14

Vegas has certainly had its chances, but Max Pacioretty hasn’t lit the lamp since scoring two goals against the Canucks on August 30.

The  Vegas Golden Knights must be experiencing a weird sense of déjà vu. Didn’t they just escape a series in which they were the better team, only to face elimination because of an exceptional opposing goalie?

Instead of Thatcher Demko, it’s now the Dallas Stars' Anton Khudobin who could single-handedly disappoint NHL bettors while propelling the Stars to their first Stanley Cup final in 20 years. They’re one victory away after a 2-1 win in Game 4.

Let’s check out the NHL odds and our best Stars vs. Golden Knights picks and predictions for Game 5 in Edmonton, a must-win game for Vegas, set for Monday at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Dallas Stars vs Vegas Golden Knights betting preview

Starting Goalies

Stars: Anton Khudobin - playoffs -11-6, 2.67 GAA, .918 SV% (season – 16-8, 2.22, .930 SV%)

Golden Knights: Robin Lehner - playoffs - 9-6, 1.93 GAA, .919 SV% (season – 19-10, 2.89 GAA, .920 SV%)

Vegas continues to outshoot the Stars in this series and control the puck, not that it’s mattered much to Khudobin, who stopped 32 shots in Game 4. Three of those crucial stops came during an extended 5 on 3 for the Knights in the third period. The absence of Ben Bishop—deemed “unfit to play” a couple of weeks ago—seems insignificant now.

I don’t do a particularly good Robin Lehner impression, but here goes: “Hey guys. How about a little help?!” Lehner stopped 20 shots in Game 4 and has been very good in this series, though his teammates have to find a way to score. Sometimes the game really is that simple.

Injuries

Stars: Roope Hintz LW (ques), Taylor Fedun D (ques), Radek Faksa C (ques), Stephen Johns D (out), Roman Polak D (out), Martin Hanzal C (out)
Golden Knights: Thomas Nosek LW (ques)

Moneyline Pick

How dominant have the Knights been offensively in this series? They’ve outshot the Stars 105-67, yet still find themselves in a 3-1 series hole. To be fair, the Stars have done a great job of mirroring what the Canucks did in the previous series—preventing the Knights from crowding the net and letting Khudobin get a good look at the puck.

It doesn’t help that Vegas’ big guns have gone silent as well. Neither Max Pacioretty nor Jonathan Marchessault has scored in this series, and the Knights are 15 goals below expectation against the Stars. There’s no way that the Knights should be priced this high.

PREDICTION: Stars ML (+160)

Over/Under Pick

The odds tell you that bookmakers expect a high-scoring Golden Knights victory, but haven’t we been saying that all series? The under has hit in Vegas’ last seven games, and until the Knights find a way to beat Khudobin, I don’t see that changing.

PREDICTION: Under 5 (+105)

Prop pick

Despite Dallas’ defense frustrating the Knights, Vegas has certainly had its chances. Pacioretty hasn’t lit the lamp since scoring two goals against the Canucks on August 30, so let’s see if we can make some plus money on him finally breaking through.

PREDICTION: Max Pacioretty to score (+180)
