Blackhawks vs Red Wings Picks: Chicago's Owns The Wings

The Blackhawks have been inconsistent in generating offense, but they are far superior offensively to their opponent tonight, Detroit, which has topped two goals just three times in its last 12 games.

NHL sharp money and line movement report

By Patrick Everson

FanDuel's moneyline has bounced around quite a bit today, after opening with Chicago a -142 favorite. The Blackhawks stretched to -152, then dialed down to -134 and are -136 as of 4:30 p.m. ET. Despite the dip, Chicago is still landing 81 percent of bets and 83 percent of money. The total opened 5.5 (Under -120), with the only move so far coming on the price, to a flat -110. The Over is getting 55 percent of bets, while the Under is seeing 54 percent of cash.

Moneyline pick

The Red Wings are coming off a 4-2 win on the road in Nashville but even with that victory, Detroit is just 4-10-2 this season and has the second-worst goal differential in the league at minus-18.

The Blackhawks are fresh off an overtime win against Columbus and are 7-5-4. They've actually been very competitive since giving the starting goaltending job to rookie Kevin Lankinen, going 7-2-3 since a January 22 showdown with the Wings.

Chicago defeated Detroit by a score of 4-1 that night and followed up on that with another comfortable win against the Red Wings two nights later.

Detroit has been awful in just about every phase of play. It ranks 22nd in the league in goals allowed per game with 3.19—and that's actually one of their better rankings. They are second-last in the NHL in both scoring (2.06 goals per game) and on the power play, while ranking 27th on the penalty kill.

The Blackhawks have also struggled to score, averaging just 2.94 gpg, but in comparison to the Red Wings they may as well be the 1980s Edmonton Oilers. They also have an edge between the pipes with Lankinen.

It's not every day you can fade the Red Wings at a decent price like -140 so don't think twice about backing Chicago in this spot.

PREDICTION: Chicago (-140)

Over/Under pick

We mentioned Lankinen already but we need to bring up the sensational rookie once again for our Over/Under wager. The 25-year-old is 6-2-3 with a 2.49 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage this year, and he looks every bit like the goalie that backstopped Finland to a Gold Medal at the 2019 World Cup.

Lankinen was roughed up for six goals against the Blue Jackets last Thursday, but he's generally been very consistent and bounced back with a strong performance on Saturday.

In two games against the Red Wings earlier this season, Lankinen turned aside 55 of 58 shots. He should be in for another good start tonight against a Detroit team that can't find the back of the net, scoring two or fewer goals in nine of its last 12 games.

That said, the Blackhawks haven't exactly been consistent at generating offense themselves, tallying more than three goals just twice in their last 10 games.

With the Under 4-0 in Chicago's last four games on the road, and the Under also 4-0 in Detroit's previous four home contests, back it again tonight.

PREDICTION: Under 5.5 (-115)
