NHL Sharp Money and Line Movement Report

By Patrick Everson

This moneyline has done a little back-and-forth at BetMGM Nevada, where the hometown Golden Knights opened -115 and dipped to -110 pick 'em twice. As of 6:30 p.m. ET, Vegas is back at the -115 opener. "Tickets are almost 3/1 on the Knights, and money is 9/1 on the Knights. The biggest bet is $20,000 on the Knights at -115," BetMGM Nevada's Scott Shelton said. The total of 5.5 saw the price adjust from Under -115 to Under -125 and is now Under -120, with ticket count 2/1 and money 3/1 on the Over.

Moneyline pick

For the second straight game, the Vegas Golden Knights have far outplayed the Avalanche. This time, after a heroic performance from Philipp Grubauer stole the show in Game 2, they were rewarded for it. While Colorado looked like it may yet again steal a game, two quick third period goals for Vegas turned the game around and got the Knights back in the series.

Though the Avalanche were leading in the final frame and lost by just one goal, that doesn't nearly tell the story of the Knights' resurgence. Since being hammered 7-1 in Game 1, Vegas has dominated play.

Over the last two games, the Knights lead the Avalanche in expected goals, 7.49 to 4.84. They have out-shot Colorado, 84-45. The Knights have created seven high-danger chances and 21 medium-danger chances, compared to two and 20 for the Avs.

Perhaps most surprising of all, however, is the way they have corraled Colorado's top line. After averaging 6.4 points per game through five postseason appearances, Miko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog and Nathan MacKinnon have combined for just four points in their last two games. The most dominant line to begin the playoffs has become an afterthought in a series they're being outplayed in.

As Game 2 proved, between the Avalanche's depth of talent and Grubauer delivering in net, Colorado can steal a game, and a raucous crowd is certain to provide a spark in Game 5. It's difficult to see things changing for Colorado on the road in Game 4, however, with the Knights leveling the series before it heads back to Denver.

PREDICTION: Vegas (-113)

Over/Under pick

As expected, the Avalanche and Golden Knights played under Game 3's 5.5 total, though an empty-net goal at the death could have seen it go Over. Vegas and Colorado have played tight games all season long, with the Under now 8-2 over the last 10 games between these two.

Colorado goalie Philipp Grubauer continues to shine as his team's best player, and a couple of unlucky bounces stood between the German stealing another game for the Avs. As it was, he stopped 40 of the Knights' 43 shots in Game 3. Grubauer continues to be a game-changer, despite Colorado's loss. Game 3 saw Vegas get three past Grubauer, though its expected goals of 4.513 speaks to Grubauer's performance.

Grubauer's goals saved above expectation of 3.8 is fifth among postseason netminders, just ahead of his counterpart, Marc-Andre Fleury (3.0). After a rusty Game 2 performance, Fleury was improved in Game 3 despite seeing just 20 shots. The Flower was +0.15 in goals saved above expectation, after a -0.314 mark in Game 2. While all three of the Avs' goals in Game 2 were categorized as low-danger per MoneyPuck, Game 3 saw one medium- and one high-danger chance get by.

An explosive Game 1 aside, this series has been exactly as tight as one would have expected coming into it, with Grubauer and Fleury both delivering for their teams, as they have all season long. Don't expect that to change in Game 4.

PREDICTION: Under 5.5 (-121)
