Against the Spread (ATS) Pick
LSU and Alabama have already met once this season, and that game was thoroughly dominated by the Crimson Tide, who won 105-75 in Baton Rouge. This game might not end exactly as that one did, but it certainly seems like a tough ask for LSU to keep this one close. Most of that boils down to how different these teams are on the defensive end. On the year, Alabama is eighth in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency (all efficiency stats according to KenPom.com), while LSU is 146th. The Tigers are just downright awful on that end of the floor, and that makes it hard to believe in them against a very good Crimson Tide team.
LSU has a ton of offensive talent, with Cameron Thomas and Trendon Watford both being impressive NBA prospects, and Ja’Vonte Smart and Darius Days being good themselves. However, this team just doesn’t defend the perimeter or the paint, and that means that Alabama is going to be able to pick LSU apart. Nate Oats is one of the best offensive minds in basketball right now, and he has the talent in place to execute his game plans to perfection. Guards John Petty Jr., Jaden Shackelford, Jahvon Quinerly and Joshua Primo will all be threats to put up some big numbers in this one, and forward Herbert Jones should be able to do the same. This is just an awful matchup for the Tigers, and that’s what it boils down to.
For what it’s worth, Oats’ teams are 20-7 ATS in games with a total of at least 160.0.
PREDICTION: Alabama -8.5 (-110)
Normally, when you see a total as high as this one, your first instinct is to take the Under. However, that’s exactly what the oddsmakers want you to do. And generally, these absurdly high totals end up going Over, no matter what the sport is.
That’s not the only reason to play the Over, though. Both of these teams are just excellent offensively, and the two of them can light it up against anybody. But with how bad LSU is on defense, this game is very likely to turn into a shootout, and it would open up even more if the Tigers find themselves playing catchup early.
PREDICTION: Over 162.0 (-110)
