Dylan Cease is putting together a solid season for the San Diego Padres, but he has struggled in one area, and I'm hoping to take advantage of that with my best MLB player props for today.
See why I'm also betting on Astros superstar Jose Altuve and Angels outfielder Mickey Moniak with my MLB picks for Saturday, September 7.
MLB props for September 7
- Altuve Over 0.5 runs (-125 at bet365)
- Moniak Over 0.5 hits + runs + RBI (+105 at DraftKings)
- Cease Over 2.5 walks (+145 at bet365)
Today’s best MLB props
Prop bet #1: Jose Altuve Over 0.5 runs
Jose Altuve has been one of the best hitters in the world for the last decade, and this season has been no different. The six-time Silver Slugger recipient is batting .297 and leads the Houston Astros with 82 runs in 137 games.
Arizona Diamondbacks southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez missed the first five months of the season due to a shoulder injury and he hasn't been effective since returning to the mound. In five starts, the left-hander has pitched to a 5.33 ERA with an expected ERA of 5.67. The D-Backs also have a poor bullpen that sits 23rd in the majors in ERA (4.31) and 25th in WHIP (1.36).
Altuve performs better at home where he slugs .489 and has plated 46 runs in 68 games. He also has a history of raking against lefties and is slashing .351/.414/.504 with the platoon advantage this year. With Altuve scoring 22 runs in 28 games over the last month, back the 'Stros lead-off man to tally a run today.
Prop bet #2: Mickey Moniak Over 0.5 hits + runs + RBI
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mickey Moniak isn't having the best season, but there are a few reasons to like him against the Texas Rangers today.
It's been a rough rookie campaign for Rangers right-hander Jack Leiter, who has pitched to an 11.78 ERA with an OBA of .360 through five starts. Those numbers aren't inflated by outlier performances either since Leiter has surrendered 5+ runs in four of his five outings. The Rangers also have a poor bullpen behind Leiter, with their relievers ranking 24th in the majors in ERA (4.38) and 26th in WHIP (.242).
Moniak is slugging .400 on the year, but that number ticks up to .424 when he has the platoon advantage. He's been red-hot since the start of August, slashing .317/.357/.646 with seven homers, 16 RBI, and 14 runs through 21 games. Moniak's barrel rate has also surged to 25% over the last two weeks, compared to 9% beforehand.
Prop bet #3: Dylan Cease Over 2.5 walks
The San Diego Padres will send Dylan Cease to the hill tonight as they host the San Francisco Giants. Although the hard-throwing Cease generates a ton of misses, he struggles with control and sits in the bottom 40th percentile in walk rate.
Cease has been especially wild lately, walking 3+ batters in six of his last 10 starts. Luis Campusano will be behind the plate for Cease today, as he has in 25 of Cease's 29 starts this season. Campusano rates as one of the worst framing catches in the majors according to Baseball Savant, ranking 56th out of 57 qualifying backstops.
With the Giants 10th in the majors in walk rate (8.4%), take the Over 2.5 walks for Cease at plus money.
