Padres vs Dodgers Picks and Predictions: Dodgers Get Revenge Behind Urias' Arm

Julio Urias has been the Dodgers' most consistent arm this year, and he'll take the mound as they seek revenge against the Padres for last night's whupping. Given how Urias has handled them, our MLB picks are confident backing him to hold the line.

Padres vs Dodgers Picks and Predictions: The San Diego Padres opened their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a resounding 7-1 victory. The Dodgers barely avoided being shutout, scoring their lone run in the ninth inning.

They’ll ask Julio Urias to snap a three-game losing streak tonight at Chavez Ravine. The Padres, who have won their last four, counter with Sean Manaea, who has faced the Dodgers twice and has been shelled both times.

Do the Dodgers’ bats wake up and take it out on Manaea, or does San Diego win their second game in a row on the road? Find out with our free MLB betting picks and predictions for Padres vs. Dodgers on September 3.

Padres vs Dodgers betting preview

Starting pitchers

Sean Manaea (7-7, 4.90 ERA): The Dodgers have not been kind to the left-hander, rocking him both times he’s faced them this season. The first was in April when they got him for six earned runs and six hits in 4.1 innings. The next outing was worse. Los Angeles tagged him August 5 for eight earned runs on 10 hits in four innings. The rest of August wasn’t any better for the 30-year-old. In six games, he’s given up three or more runs five times and has a 7.88 ERA for the month.

Julio Urias (14-7, 2.32 ERA): Urias is about the only starting pitcher that hasn’t been injured or come back from an injury for the Dodgers this season. As such, the 26-year-old has become the ace of Los Angeles pitching staff. He has the second-most innings pitched, behind Tony Gonsolin, who recently went on the 15-day-injured list with a strained forearm. He also has the second-most wins and a rock-solid ERA. He’s faced San Diego once this season and allowed one run on two hits in five innings.

Padres vs Dodgers picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Run line analysis

The Dodgers were a worn-out team when they faced the Padres Friday night. They had just come off a seven-game road trip and had dropped their last two to the New York Mets. Then they flew home late Thursday night and faced a well-rested Padres team on Friday. They lost, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the fatigue and the Southern California heat wave took a combined toll on his team.

Now after a night sleeping in their own beds, the team should be ready to do what it has done for most of the season: dominate San Diego. The Padres’ victory last night “improved” their record against Los Angeles to 3-8.

San Diego has to face Julio Urias, who was on a tear in August, winning four of the five games he pitched last month, allowing just two runs on 17 hits in 24 innings. The one game he didn’t win, he allowed just one run on two hits through six innings.

Urias’ ERA for the month is a puny 0.90 and his WHIP of 0.95 is tied for fourth-best in the majors, as is his 2.32 overall ERA.

The Dodgers made Yu Darvish look like Bob Gibson on Friday, managing just two hits through seven scoreless innings. If the bullpen hadn’t allowed a meaningless run in the ninth, it would have been the seventh time the team was shut out this season.

That’s out of character for a team tied for first in batting average and fifth in hits. The Dodgers are also first in on base percentage and slugging percentage.

Expect a more refreshed L.A. team tonight. It’s 17-3 in the past 20 games against the Padres and has outscored them 56-25 this season.

Prediction: Dodgers -1.5 (-105 at Unibet)

Over/Under analysis

The Dodgers are first in the majors in runs and RBI, so Friday’s one-run performance was an anomaly. L.A. had scored three or more runs in four of its five previous games.

Now the Dodgers get to pick on San Diego starter Sean Manaea, who has been awful against them, giving up 14 runs in two meetings this season.

That, coupled with an August Manaea would rather forget — where he gave up 22 runs in five games — and this has Over written all over it.

Urias will most likely keep San Diego bats quiet. He’s been blistering hot in August, allowing three runs over his last 30 innings. Even if San Diego fails get anything going, Manaea could flirt with the Over by himself.

The Over is trending for both teams. For Los Angeles, the Over is 4-0 following a loss and 4-0-1 in their last five at home against a left-hander.

For the Padres, the Over is 5-1 in their last six against National League West teams and is 4-1 in the last five overall.

Prediction: Over 8.5 (-105 at PointsBet)

Best bet

There was no hotter pitcher than Julio Urias in August. The 26-year-old lefty has been scorching opposing batters the last 31 days. He’s gotten decisions in every game he pitched, winning four and losing one. His July was nearly as good, winning four of his five games, and giving up nine runs in 28 innings.

What’s more, the one game he lost in August wasn’t really his fault. He only allowed one run on two hits over six innings to the Milwaukee Brewers, but the Dodgers’ offense was held scoreless.

With Urias having won seven of his last eight games, his dominance over the Padres in his previous meeting, and the better-rested Dodgers primed for revenge, I like him to get his 15th win of the year tonight.

Julio Urias prop pick: To record win (+105 at DraftKings)
