Mets vs Angels Sunday Night Baseball Props: Halo's Hit Parade Marches On

With Shohei Ohtani out of the lineup tonight, we're turning to Jared Walsh, fresh off his cycle night, to punish Mets starter Taijuan Walker in our favorite Sunday Night Baseball player prop picks. It'll be a hit parade for the Angels once more.

Jun 12, 2022 • 16:33 ET • 4 min read

With their 14-game losing streak mercifully in the rearview mirror, the Los Angeles Angels have won two of their last four heading into Sunday Night Baseball against the New York Mets. The Halos tallied 15 hits in last night's 11-6 win over the Metropolitans and face a starter tonight who is prone to allowing buckets of base hits.

We're targeting Taijuan Walker's hits allowed prop as a result while banking on Jared Walsh to be one of the hitters doing damage. On the flip side, we don't like Angels starter Patrick Sandoval's chances at avoiding the dreaded base on balls with consistency in our favorite player prop picks for Sunday Night Baseball on June 12.

Today’s best Mets vs Angels prop bets

Walker gets hit

Mets starter Taijuan Walker has generally gotten solid results this season, owning a 3.28 ERA over his nine starts. Dependable though he is, his peripherals don't exactly inspire confidence.

Walker's lack of, er, walks is excellent, but that also means he's in and around the strike zone with regularity and when opponents swing, they don't miss. He hasn't thrown enough innings to rank as a qualified starter, but only two hurlers with at least 40 innings under their belts this season have a lower strikeout rate than Walker's 12.9%.

In that same cohort, Walker has a hard-hit rate of 42.9% and ranks in the Bottom 25% of pitchers in terms of average exit velocity.

When healthy, the Angels lineup is one of the most fearsome in baseball. And while breakout outfielder Taylor Ward and slap-hitting infielder David Fletcher are still on the shelf, the rest of the lineup is fully intact. Mike Trout avoided injury last week and has looked no worse for wear after missing a couple of games. He went 3-for-4 in last night's game against these same Mets.

Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and Jared Walsh combined for 10 hits on Saturday night. Facing a pitcher like Walker, who doesn't miss any bats to speak of, and the middle of Los Angeles' order will be primed to feast on a meatball buffet.

Additionally, Walker's ability to keep the ball in the zone means he's not wasting a lot of pitches, so he tends to pitch fairly deep into his starts even if he's giving up his fair share of hits. Since the beginning of May, he's allowed at least five hits in six of seven starts and six-plus in four of those.

There's also more value on targeting Walker's hits allowed prop than the Under on his 4.5 strikeouts, which can be found at -133. Even though the Angels tend to strike out vs. right-handers at a high clip (25.4%), Walker can't be counted on to suddenly turn into a whiff machine. The lack of certainty on the strikeouts — in either direction — makes it easier to bank on the Angels, who rank 11th in hits vs. righties, to pull through.

Pick: Taijuan Walker Over 5.5 hits allowed (-120)

Just Jared

Initially, we were rolling with Shohei Ohtani to go Over 1.5 total bases tonight in a favorable matchup against a pitch-to-contact hurler like Walker, but the DH is not in the starting lineup. Instead, let's pivot to Jared Walsh.

Walsh, like Ohtani, is a power-hitting lefty who has done the bulk of his damage against right-handed pitching. While Walker suppresses home runs — just three allowed this season — Walsh has gap power as well and takes his hacks. The 28.7% strikeout rate is normally a concern, but not against a pitcher who so seldomly misses bats.

Since the start of May, Walsh has 19 extra-base hits and 11 multi-hit games — including last night's four-hit explosion where he hit for the cycle.

Pick: Jared Walsh Over 1.5 total bases (+140)

Sandoval isn't sharp

The Mets have scored more runs than any other team in baseball this season and, yet, we aren't singling out any one particular batter tonight against Angels left-hander Patrick Sandoval.

First of all, the Mets have the 18th-ranked OPS against lefties, and they've done most of their damage against right-handers.

Secondly, Sandoval hasn't allowed a single home run in 48 innings of work. Sure, a slugger like Pete Alonso could be the first to take him yard, but we're not banking on him doing so.

Where Sandoval gets into trouble — and is a contributing factor as to why he's only thrown 48 innings across nine starts despite a 2.81 ERA — is his suspect command. Sandoval is walking 4.5 batters per nine innings and has found success when he's been able to induce soft or medium contact. Only five starters who have thrown 40-plus innings this season have a worse BB/9.

He's walked one or fewer batters in two of his nine starts, which explains why the Over 1.5 is juiced to -150. The Mets may struggle to do consistent damage against lefty pitching this season, but they do rank within the Top 10 in walk rate vs. southpaws. And with several OBP-centric hitters in the lineup, I expect at least a couple free passes.

Pick: Patrick Sandoval Over 1.5 walks given (-150)
