Cardinals vs White Sox Picks and Predictions: Rodon Gives ChiSox Good Value to Sweep

The Chicago White Sox have proven to be top dogs in the battle of Central Division leaders, taking the first two games from the St. Louis Cardinals in this interleague series.

The White Sox will now go for the sweep when they hand the ball to Carlos Rodon in a matinee matchup, while the Cardinals try to salvage the series by countering with John Gant.

Cardinals vs White Sox betting preview

Starting pitchers

John Gant (3-3, 2.04 ERA): Gant is getting a chance to be a regular starter for the Cardinals for the first time since 2018 and he is doing his best to take advantage of the opportunity. The right-hander has a strong 2.04 ERA but has been a bit lucky, pitching to a 1.56 WHIP and a 4.13 FIP.

Carlos Rodon (5-1, 1.27 ERA): Rodon has been one of the best stories in baseball this season. The former first-round pick signed a one-year, prove-it deal to return to the White Sox and has been outstanding. The lefty has a 0.79 WHIP and a 1.90 FIP to go along with that sparkling ERA.

Run line pick

The White Sox have bounced back from a mini-slump by taking the first two games in this series against the Cardinals and we like them to keep it going in the finale.

A quick look at Gant’s ERA and you think he’s having a pretty solid season, but as noted, the right-hander has been somewhat fortunate to this point. The 1.56 WHIP is concerning but the biggest concern in this matchup has to be the walks. Gant has handed out 28 free passes in just 39 2-3 innings. And giving extra base runners to the White Sox is never a good idea.

While the Pale Hose were struggling a bit at the dish prior to this series, they have scored at least five runs in each of the first two games and they draw the fourth-most walks per game in baseball. They also rank eighth in batting average and 10th in OPS against right-handed pitching this season.

Countering Gant is Rodon, who has looked unhittable at times this season and as a result, opponents are hitting just .146 off him this season. With the Cards' top-heavy lineup hitting just .219 against lefties on the road this season, taking the Pale Hose on the run line seems like a safe bet.

PREDICTION: White Sox -1.5 (+115)

Over/Under pick

You can’t say the total for this series hasn’t been consistent. We are looking at our third straight game with a total of 8.5 with Game 1 staying Under and Game 2 landing above the number (with the help of a gluttony of errors). So, where will Game 3 land?

Well, if this one is going to go Over we are going to need to see more from the Cards' offense. They have struggled to generate runs in this series and have plated three runs or fewer seven times in their last nine games. And now they have to deal with Rodon... so, no: We’re betting that they don’t get back on track in this one.

And while the White Sox are capable of doing most of the heavy lifting to send this one Over Gant and the Cards pitch well enough in general that we like this one to stay Under.

PREDICTION: Under 8.5 (-110)
