Bush lowered taxes and I'd have to say the economy is rosy.
Even people that didnt go to an Ivy league school understand that there are many dynamics that contribute to our economy struggling right now. Hello boogreenz, the whole world is facing a slowed economy. Is that Bush's fault too?
What about oil prices? Does that have an impact on our economy? My 12 year old kids understand this.
Every time you post you make it harder for me to believe you even made it past 6th grade. It wouldnt suprise me if you admitted that your not potty trained.

I registered Republican because my dad always said Democrats were 'bummy people looking for handouts'
And while i'm registered Republican, i don't feel that i'm part of their party. Gov't has failed me at every level and every turn, so i have no faith in my gov't doing right by me. My representatives are just looking out for themselves, and are not doing there job = Representing ME!!
My vote this year is still up for grabs, but i feel both Obama and McCain are very poor choices.

I'll answer you question simply and honestly:

*Education: I went to an $11K/yr. school (and this was 20 years ago)....we were a middle class family w/5 kids. I had ZERO chance to go there if not for 1. Student loans (I maxed out) and 2. Contributions and scholarships through alumni donations. I also went to the U of M for grad school and received a $4K stipend each year to help me pay for it (once again, I was maxed out on loand and I also worked). I have since paid every cent back that I borrowed, but I still wouldn't have been able to do it without some help. For that, I am grateful. I am now a part owner in a business and believe me, I have paid my debt back and then some.
*The world hates us. I'm sorry, but I don't think this is a good thing. I think you can defend your interests effectively without alienating the entire world.
*Sorry, but the republicans haven't earned 4 more years. And yes, I think this matters.
*I believe there truly are people who do everything they can and can't get ahead (I've seen plenty in my work). Unfortunately, helping them benefits the free loaders as well and that makes me sick.

Tell me how bad off you were during Clinton's 8 years
Tell me how bad off you were during Bush's 8 years
Did you feel the same, financially for instance?
You do not vote for the CEO of AIG, Lehman Brothers, Bear Sterns.....you vote for the President of the United States.
If you want a government that cares/does right by you (and for you), then you are thinking more like a Democrat.
If you are comfortable believing that the private sector...AIG, Lehman Brothers, Bear Sterns....cares/does right by you (and for you), then you are thinking more like a Republican.
Yes, I am simplifying this....but, that's because this is pretty simple....and always has been....

Easy........
Look at the last 16 years...

I don't want a govt to "take care" of me. I want my govt to secure my country's borders, keep thugs off the streets and put criminals in jail, provide basic services like water, sewer, streets and access to electricity and gas.
I don't want them to pay for my doctor, help keep people in houses they never should have bought in the first place, keep businesses that are poorly run afloat and tax away my incentive to work hard and give it to someone who hasn't in the name of fairness.
Basically, keep the peace, prevent abuse of power both political and financial and then get out of the way.

I ain't easy, but I'd like to answer this too.

Again you are wrong...I have never been affiliated with a party...My father is a democrat although he has voted across party lines throughout his adult life. My mother is an independent although she also has voted across party lines her entire life. My Father's parents and siblings and most people where I live in Pennsylvania are democrats. Both support Barack Obama in this election.
I feel that the two party system, as did George Washington, and lack of term limits are the two most significant problems with the procedural aspect of our democracy (or rightly characterized as an aristocracy).
As I stated above: I am fiscally conservative--believe you should not spend money you do not have (goes for the Government too) and that the Government should not take my money for its irresponsibility. On social issues, I am against Abortion, the Death Penalty, Religious intervention in Government...I am for Gay Rights and helping those that can't help themselves (although this as a private mission may be better run).
But now you have disintigrated an interesting thread about why people feel the way they do into an argument.
Jopiscopo: The fact that they would not provide me with the same human rights or civil liberties is what made us, at one time, the shining beacon on the hill. I feel proud that we do ask for someone to prove guilt before we throw them to the wolves. I cannot respect the principle that people are guilty just because our intelligence-- which has been woefully wrong many times in the past-- says so...if they are guilty than we should be able to show some evidence at a hearing to keep them detained.
cd-- thanks for the fact check but I was paraphrasing as indicated by the lack of quotation marks....

Does it offend you that many of us are unaffiliated and do not need the support of a political party to think rationally about the issues and challenges that face us...

Am I the only one on here that thinks that this is not even a fair question to ask?
During the last 8 years there have been events that Bush had to deal with (excluding the Iraq war) that Clinton or any other president had to deal with.
Am I the only one that recognizes that 9/11 could have killed our economy for many years but didnt. We recovered rather quickly after that.
What was the price of a gallon of galoline when Clinton was president?
Ask truck driving companies if they blame Bush or High gas prices for their struggles. The backbone of our economy is tourism, auto industry and freight. You have problems with any of these and were gonna struggle. This is not rocket science.

I was paraphrasing the second line of Kennedy's speech and kind of mixed the first and second---but is a minor point in any discussion...
I understand your post but do not understand the relevance. This thread was started to see how many individuals actually had a positive view of their party or just a negative view of the other. I understand the difference in the party's platform but feel that neither party has kept to its platform over the years. --For example, Limited Government has never been a policy of Bush--maybe in words not in actions,
As to the question of who will win the election in November--I am not sure....Yes, the Democrats should win--the Republicans have done nothing to garner another four years. But, the Democrats should have won in 2004 and lost for what I believe is the mere reason that Republican party is able to energize the base to vote while the Democrats have trouble turning out the vote. Republicans win by supressing the vote and Rovian tactics of invigorating people on emotional issues such as Gay Rights and Abortion.
I think Obama will win, I hope that he is not just another politician, and I pray that he will reform the unethical behavior in the Congress and White House.
One warning: If Obama wins and turns out to be just another politician it will marginalize an entire generation of possible voters.

I ask you to please read, or Google,"The Price of Loyalty"
You will understand why we went into Iraq
You will also understand the foundation that was set for the economic mess that we have now.
You will understand, to an extent, the role of Dick Cheney and the oil industry in the decisions of the administration
The information in this book, published in 2004, came..for the most part...from Bush's first Secretary of the Treasury, Paul O'Neill.
A staunch conservative Republican and Cabinet Member, part of the National Security Council.......this is not stuff written by the leftwing media.....This book is the foundation for what historians will call."The worst administration in the history of the country"

Apache the price of gas has nothing to do with the Democratic Congress, along with some of the other points. The reason gas is so expensive is because the US$$ is so weak. Gas is traded in the US$$ and with the dollar being weak gas price is more expensive.

I question your delivery of this message and your motive. I do not stand by this administration and have been strongly against the war from its inception...my reasons are because of the history of the region and the lack of democratic institutions in the region to support a completely alien idea of democracy to its citizenry.
I fully understand the economic mess we are in...the inception and the current fallout. My brother is a Mortgage Trader on Wall Street and we have continually talked about the intricacies of the mortgage trade and I am a former staff member on Capital Hill that speaks with former classmates and colleagues about the expansion of the CRA, the lack of oversight of Fannie and Freddie, the ninja laws, etc.
I believe your post is both condescending and irrelevant to why you are or are not affiliated with a party....I apologize if you were just attempting to say "Hey, I have a great book for you to read" but it doesn't seem to be your motive. I don't know if you are trying to pick a fight but who knows.
Furthermore, I do not think I have espoused any views with this Administration, with the Republican party, or with the Republican platform. I actually dilineated many other posters from being republican to being conservative.
Finally, I have watched many speeches and interviews of Paul O'Neill and if you want to talk further about any specific issues I would be more than happy to explain my views in detail.

Kennyvegas- I also respect you and recognize you as being one of the more inteligent members of this forum.
Speaking again on Guantanamo. I dont feel that US taxpayers should have to foot the bill of hundreds of captured detainees to try to prove their innocense or guilt when the majority of the people they detain are guilty.
What incentive does our government have of detaining innocent people from Iraq or Afghanastan? I dont think Bush or cheney are just grabbing everybody wearing a turbin and throwing them in GITMO. How expensive and counterproductive would it be to have to try every one of these guys when there is little doubt in our outstanding military personels motives? Surely we have had a few bad apples but not many.

Because Iraq/Oil/Cheney/The Saudis/Wall St are intrinsically intertwined........
Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11......But Bush used 9/11 to invade Iraq.......the money spent to fulfill Bush's wish to kill Hussein and his inability to have an exit strategy has affected us for the 6+ years and for years to come.
George Bush Jr...and Cheney/Halliburton could care less about the United States of America.....the power to convince through lies has brought us to where we are.
These are bad people...period. Just look at the first weeks of the Bush administration and draw a line through all the events of the last 8 years......the line goes downward.....

I am at a loss...this is an unwarranted attack on me. I have never stated anything on the Bush Administration except disgust for this War and the treatment of Detainees in Guantanamo. You have now started to post things to me that I never defended, suggested, or stated.
You post is also a tenuous argument. Yes the whole world is intertwined but there is no direct link between the War and our Current economic crisis...This crisis arises moreso from policy within our own borders not overseas. Yes the cost of the war has had a negative affect on the strength of the dollar and thus caused increasing oil prices etc.
I agree with you that Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11--there may be a minor financial support but nothing that warrants war or any military conflict. Yes different politicians seem to care little about the future of america then their own greed and self-interest.
I dissent with you that Halliburton could care less about the United States....all multinational corporations do better when the USA is economically strong. We also provide a low taxed arena to do their business, as well as, being a very big client-- Could care less-- hard to believe.
Whether they are good or bad people is irrelevant to any of my analysis. It is bringing emotion to where emotion is not needed. It clouds judgement just as when you bet on your favorite team. If they are doing what is right for this nation, trying to do what is right for the international world (when not in conflict with our survival) and trying to protect human rights where they can, then I could care less of evil thoughts in their hearts. It is unquestionable that Bush and his Administration have failed miserably on each of these fronts-- the only thing I could currently think of that has impressed me with Bush is his commitment to provide for international AIDS research.
Jo--
There is an old adage in the American Justice System that states, "It is better for ten guilty to go free than one innocent man being convicted." It is the premise for the presumption of innocence and the reasonable doubt standard. I feel that if these individuals are guilty, it takes little for a hearing to set a preponderance of evidence to go forward...your economic argument is somewhat overstated. There are many of attorneys who have defended certain individuals pro bono and the cost of a hearing is just time and salary for the tribunal.

Kenny- It was some time ago( few years maybe) but I remember watching a documentary on Nat Geo channel and they were explaining the process of obtaining intel from captured prisoners from GITMO.
They were using techniques at the time mainly involving sleep deprivation to get these prisoners to "talk".
They also told that there was a period of time when more prisoners started to talk and give up intel on a regular basis.
One prisoner told the reason he sided with the US and started giving up information as he stated Because I found out that sleep deprivation was the worst thing you were going to do to me, If I had been a captive in my own country by MY own people I would have been killed or tortured or both. thats not verbatum but the general Idea of what he said.
I live my life by the Golden rule. I cannot condone spending energy defending somone that would not afford me the same idea. If they didnt constantly chop Americans like Nick Bergs head off I would certainly cut them some more slack. Nick Berg was helping their country in many ways. They chose not to see him for that. Barbaric people deserve barbaric tactics I have little sympathy for people that willfully try to kill Americans and have litte respect for human life themselves.
I respect your opinion. I always agree with due process for Americans and peaceful visitors. I do not think our forefathers wanted the constitution to cover those people that hate us and wish for our overall demise.

My diatribe was not in response to you; I apologize if you thought so....I was asked to draw a connection....I believe that, since Day1 of the Bush administration, our country has been in a downward spiral.
Actually, you could start before day 1, when the head of the screening committee to find George Bush Jr a Vice-Presidential candidate...chose himself.
If you understood the early days of Bush Jr when he went back to Texas, this New England-raised boy of privledge, and used his fathers business contacts and oil friends to develop a career....people with a lot of power and influence were attracted to this intellectually weak down-home man...he became the "vehicle" for so many....ultimately, becoming the Governor in Austin with the aforementioned "Texas Mafia".....then it got worse.....
I really have no desire to go on....I seriously doubt that anyone in this forum has done much to understand and learn about our current President....but we are where we are today because of Bush/Cheney/Halliburton/Saudis/Oil/Power/....for starters.
I voted for his father, respected George HW Bush, followed his time in the CIA, trusted his judgement....didn't always like the way he said things...but trusted him. His son, that's another story.

I voted for his father, respected George HW Bush, followed his time in the CIA, trusted his judgement....didn't always like the way he said things...but trusted him. His son, that's another story.
