JFK believed in Americans helping America....however, as a Democrat, he believed that the foundation for growth of our country had to start with a strong federal government.
Civil rights, for one, had been a states' issue....he and Robert Kennedy faced that one head on....made it a federal (big government) issue.
The Reupblicans believe in small government, states' rights, and the private sector; they are also more inclined to be focused on international issues rather than domestic...believing that the states and the private sector will take care of domestic issues.
The Democrats tend to be much more domestic in their focus...and, therefore, more "big government"....the misconception that does happen with that philosophy is that we, as a people, lose our freedoms because of the federal government...we lose our right to choose. Not really very accurate.
We vote, as a country, negatively...not positively. We vote against more than we vote for; that's how the 2-party system evolves in history.
While Iraq is still an important issue in the election...as we saw last night....it has become more of a domestic issue than an international issue....reasons have become muddled as the current administration mishandles the information flow. The economy is a domestic issue with international implications...but again....it is, as we are seeing, focused on America, not the world.
Since these are the two most important issues in this election...and both of these issues are domestic in importance, you can safely assume that the Democrats will be voted into office and the Republicans will be removed.
You can debate about policies, taxes, education, whatever....any political historian will point out the inherent (as the public sees) differences between the two parties; and it is that difference, domestic vs. international, that has determined the course of this election.

And so, my fellow Americans... ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.
