I agree.. I take back my endorcement of arming teachers. what we don't need is more dues paying union workers with guns.

You are absolutely right. Boehner and Obama missed a golden opportunity here as they wrestle with the budget. Congress should have slapped a big, fat tax on guns about two hours after Newtown. It would have been the perfect compromise to keep both flippin' sides happy. Everybody keeps their guns and taxes go up.

Watching the far right wing of the Repubs come apart at the seams is the only solace one can take from this terrible tragedy.

Most Repubs I know are fine with basic regulations, waiting periods, etc. but watching the extremists scream as if their weapons are being seized reminds of a 3rd grader complaining that they are losing all their candy when the teacher takes chewing gum.

Then maybe we should arm the students.

I'm fine with trained armed guards - use the military folks that we all pay for already. Kinda sad., but is probably a good idea nowadays. Along with seizing & banning all assault weapons...do both in the name of public safety even though it won't stop much of the overall gun violence or even events like Columbine or Sandy Hook. It would though imo lessen the sheer number of innocent deaths/injuries increasingly over time. Along with our gun culture (vid gms, TV, gangs, etc) & breakdown of families, there is far too much & different types of mental illness & this needs to be accepted & to acknowledge it, means there is a public duty in a civilized society that values life to do what can be done, regardless of whether it provides a full panacea or not.

Yes, it might be food for thought, but I don't see what it has to do with the issue being discussed now except to possibly strengthen the argument for a ban given the # of mental health issue that many vets understandably have..many of which go untreated or unsuccessfully treated.

As far as your strong 2nd amendment stance, I don't quite follow your logic. You say you are for many of the restrictions/regs that exist now, just not any more. The 2nd amendment says the right of all "the people" to own & bear arms is not to be infringed. It mentions nothing about restrictions, regulations or a past history of crime or mental illness. So why are you in favor of any regs or restrictions of any arms & the right of anyone to carry them openly anywhere...schools, bars, grocery stores, etc? If the primary reason for the 2nd A was to defend oneself &/or the people against an overreaching or tyrranical govt, why would anyone who has full citizen rights, be excluded from that? 

just because people in 1776 created laws to follow, doesnt mean people in 2012 still have to cling to those laws.  Times change and laws have to change, to whats happening in the present time frame. This is what these extremists cant seem to grasp.

Yes, taking away semi-automatics & getting rid of all high capacity magazines.

The ultimate goal of who exactly? Sure, there are some folks that would to like to see all guns banned for ordinary citizens, but not that many % wise at all. And I know of no politicians that are calling for an outright gun ban. But many (on both sides of the aisle) who do own guns & totally defend that right who would like to see these weapons & magazines banned.

So out of curiosity, just who is it exactly you realistically see coming to get your guns while disarming the populace and for what reason & ultimate purpose. Also, since you must think it's a real possibility, how do you see this happening & playing out.

A shotgun is a way better weapon for personal defense then an assualt rifle.

Somebody breaks in your house and you fire a shotgun at them, chances are high you will hit them. Fire an assualt rifle and you stand a chance of missing.

The choice is not either banning all guns or having no restrictions.

That is just how the right wing extremists are framing the issue.

And I agree....outside of an elimination of that type of rifle, the tragedy was not going to be avoided.
