and the left is pro abortion and anti guns
pretty ironic?
I think you are putting the wrong message on the gun issue...
the real irony is the pro-life/pro-capital punishment crowd...
guns dont kill people... people kill people
and the left is pro abortion and anti guns

Personally, I'm PRO LIFE AND ANTI GUN. What upsets me about the PRO CHOICE crowd is they never address this issue: If you don't want to have a baby, then don't stick it in there!

I understand your position on gun control but do you support universal background check?
Doyou support changing federal HIPAA laws so access to your medical records by the FBI is easier?

I see where you are coming from but abortion shouldn't be used as a birth control method IMHO. It's just absurd to hear there are people that have 3,4,5..or more abortions throughout their lives. Also, late-term abortion is simply horrific.![]()

No, I don't but there will be like me asking, " Do anyone want a person with no criminal record but mental illness to be able to buy a firarm?" There should be a delicate balance between privacy and public interest/safety here. That's exactly why I would like to see both sides to talk instead of holding so firmly on their respective views.
For instance, the "assault weapons ban-list" is so ridiculous to many and I don't see why the pro-guns couldn't provide a list of their own and I don't mean a list with nothing on it.

bunny,
in order for "universal background checks" to be succcessful, mental health records need to be sent to the NICS database which is run by the FBI.
States are not doing this because it violates patient privacy.
I would also add that "universal background checks" have nothing to do with mass shooting sprees. Lanza did not buy his guns, for example.

So what's your proposal on minimizing the chance of a mental person getting a hold on a firarm at the mean time? We all know we can't solve the mental crisis.......

Um, yeah, ok.
Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia have submitted fewer than 100 mental health records to the federal database. Seventeen states have submitted fewer than ten mental health records, and four states have not submitted any mental records at all.
Hey, where your source for your 40% claim? Why do you think you won't cite it?

A more recent report by the GAO goes into this problem in exacting detail. Part of the problem is technical issues relating to the transfer of data, other problems involve lack of funding for the incentives to turn over records. The study showed thirty 30 states were not making any non-criminal mental health records available to the federal database.
Note: The states’ overall progress in making unlawful drug use records available to NICS is generally unknown because of how these records are maintained. The vast majority of records made available are criminal records—such as those containing arrests or convictions for possession of a controlled substance—which cannot readily be disaggregated from other records in the databases checked by NICS. Most states are not providing noncriminal records, such as those related to positive drug test results for persons on probation. On May 1, 2012, DOJ data showed that 30 states were not making any noncriminal records available

1. Get states to update their reporting practices to align with existing law. States are not obligated to submit all of the mental health records that they possess but they can do a better job of documenting people like the VT murderer who was found by a judge to be “an imminent danger to himself as a result of mental illness.'”
2. There is a gap in the system where notification that an individual who is prohibited from possessing a firearm by a state law, but not by federal law, has submitted an application to purchase a firearm in a state other than the one where the prohibition was issued. So if you lived in CA and moved to Oklahoma, this information doesn't make it's way to NCIS. This needs fixed.

The "what" involves actual facts. Not pronouncements you simply think are factual.

That's the kind of dialogue I am talking about. It should not be difficult to have nationwide database for felons and the same goes for the people with mental illness. Obviously, it has to be separated from the person's other medical records. I realize it's a long process but it sure beats doing nothing.![]()

Promark,
if LaPierre is so awful, why did the Federal Assault Weapons ban lapse and why is the left always complaining about the influence of the NRA?

14road, La Pierre stated he's NOW AGAINST background checks for private sales at gun shows even though 80% of NRA members support them.
Right after the school shooting, he announced that we need more guns in schools, not considering the grieving family members.
