-One of regulation, and how you have to have a license to be a florist in our country (in my opinion ridiculous). Regualtions in this country are made to benefit someone, and if you think that it is the consumer in every case, you are kidding yourself.
-The tax code is a joke, it is set up so that the rich can find loopholes. This is a great example of why we need to rethink the income tax.
- Companies that move jobs overseas are doing this country a great disservice. They do so to reduce cost of labor, and avoid taxation. The solution is not more costs or taxation to do business in this country. I wonder what the result of a moratorium on payroll taxes would be. More or less jobs.
Rick, companies arent moving jobs overseas because the cost of taxes here, because the majority of comapnies in our country dont pay any taxes. I posted what the number was in another thread, which i got right off the hannity show. The reason they are doing it, is because of the slave labor wages they get to pay people for making their products, so unless our people are willing to work for those kinds of wages or our govt shuts down this loophole, they will never move the jobs back here. Its pure greed by the corporations. In the old days companies were tickled pink to make some profit, now today these fucks arent happy just making some profit, they want it all, while they use all of us to do it and shit on the country. But soon the well will dry up and there wont be anybody with money to buy their products anymore. Then all these companies can go and fuck themselves, the greedy assholes that they are.

What I am saying is that there are taxes involved with domestic labor such as payroll taxes. Rethinking how we tax corporations should include a realistic tax on corporations, that induce business not stunt it.
I agree that greed is what drives this.

America used to be the best investment opportunity in the world..Foreign companies would invest (plant, equipment, & jobs) in the US....However, the current corporate tax rate is 40% (the highest in the world) if you include state taxes....that is hardly a tax haven for any business...Denmark, for example is 24% - from a pure business decision standpoint - that is a no brainier when given choices of where to do business.
TAXES HAVE EVERYTHING TO DO WITH IT. You guys gave some glaring exapmples of a few companes that circumevent the tax laws. Most US companies do not have that luxury and they pay their fair share of taxes. The large, multi-national conglomerates are the ones you are referring to...
Our taxes laws and regulations act as a deterrent for new investment in the United States (that means job creation) . Lets see, we could set up our next arm in Great Britain, India, Germany, or the United States.....20 years ago-.Every single time the United States was the clear choice....In 2011 - the US is never the choice anymore...
So they question is ..not only, why are US corporations shipping jobs overseas,,,But why are foreign corporations refusing to invest in the Unites States currently?...That is the what must be addressed...out laws act as a deterrent for new investment in the United States..until that is reversed..the downward slide will continue.

I disagree that taxes are the reason businesses move jobs.
We can use the easy example of a company like Nike who started moving jobs overseas in the days of Reagan.
From the Nike income statement, their cost of sales is about 40%, of that I could break down certain segments to determine how much cost of sales are for shoes and what other junk they throw in cost of sales which are unrelated to product..but lets just go with that 40% range and know it is far off.
Nike had about a 12% bottom line net income and as a percentage of income tax to gross sales was 3.2%.
Do you think that if Nike had operations and production here that they would be spending more than an increase of 3.2% of sales for US labor?
No way is income tax remotely similar to cheap foreign labor as a reason to move operations.

this is the almost the antithesis of the free market.
if there werent 1000 page long laws and overzealous regulators, the companies wouldnt be put in the position they are in.
simplify the tax code.
the more 'gotcha' laws/regulations the govt creates, the more loopholes companies (and individuals) will seek after.
i was talking to an exec at an investment firm the other night, he was telling me about a client they had who was trying to give his stake in a mall to his son. depending on what happened with congress, there were options like selling or gifting that would result in vastly different costs for the father/son.
that being said, do i think some of corporations business practices or how apparently 2/3 dont pay taxes are right? no. but they operate within the rules set forth by the govt.

Answer this question...why is there no such thing as a free market?
You probably dont want to get into this discussion, it might turn into a bashing emoticon fest.
let me just say i thought this response was hilarious, and i think that not only should sarcastic stabbing comments be allowed, but they should be encouraged. i mean we are adults here, if you cant take it when someone takes a shot at you on the internet then you need to give up on life no, or do what djbrow would think necessary and get therapy.
but with that being said, isnt it a tad unbecoming for a mod, who disciplines ppl for doing such, to actively instigate with such? im just very confused as to the rules of this place, thats all.

To answer you..YES consumers eat at bad restaurants, they do it every single day. What chain is the largest out there? Their food is 90% garbage. People are sold on fast and cheap, the average low earner who eats at that place do not have the means to choose better, they cannot afford better food..they dont have time to shop and prepare for meals since most families now have two workers.
Oil change companies feast on uneducated customers, they profit off taking advantage of consumers..they mislead, misguide and try to gain excess profits off what they know and what others do not know.
I went in a few months ago to Firestone for an oil change and a tire flat repair..well what do you know they couldnt repair the flat because miraculously there was a side wall nail in addition to the flat being there (funny it wasnt there before I went in) they tried to up sell me on a full balancing even though I only had one tire that now had to be replaced..they tried to sell me a 30 buck air filter when i do it myself. And funny how when the next time I went to replace the filter it was tightened so much that I didnt have tools strong enough to open it and I had to actually crack one side to get it open (I had replaced it before several times, no problems then).
You are mistaken as to how businesses operate, they do not openly disclose what they know and what you dont know..why did it take over a century before companies listed ingredients on their product labels? Why did corporations use toxic hydrogenated oils or even worse to fry food? Why do corporations still use HFCS as as sweetener when it is a chemically derived, destructive sweetener? Why are they trying now to change the name from HFCS to "Corn Sugar"?
Why does Monsanto genetically engineer seed and go about destroying farms who do not use their product? And the same company also creates the weed and insect killer on the same products?
There is plenty of reason we need more regulation and not less, corporations have employees and groups who find ways to manipulate law and code so they can take advantage of whatever they can.Why do they intentionally and knowingly break laws, knowing that the odds they get caught and the cost of being caught is less than the profits they make in the process?
Free markets are a farce Tom..corporations are not our friend, the supply and demand function has always been flawed and the consumer has no chance at surviving, business always has more information and hides what they know so they can maximize profits.
while i agree somewhat with the oil change diatribe, its a classic case of teasing someone to get them into the store, just about every market does so.
but i used to change my own oil, but do the 'express' oil changes now bc i dont find spending $20 unreasonable. that being said, there have been times when ive brought my car in for an oil change and the tech has told me i dont need one, my oil is fine (i put very few miles on my car), or i ask about the air filter and they tell me i dont need one.
perhaps they are nice to ppl that they think are nice and are upselling pricks to ppl they dont think are nice?
certainly you know why HFCS is used, bc its dirt cheap (thanks to govt subsidies) and makes shitty food taste better.
and corps use an army of lawyers bc they need to, have you ever tried to read any law? it is written by an army of lawyers and special interest groups and god know what other evil shit lurks on k st.
listen, i think everyone is mad at the same thing, but we disagree on what causes this maddening thing.

Do most people, the average joe, do most people look at labels and see what they are eating?
Does this business use the cheapest ingredients they can in order to maximize profits or do they use what makes most sense for the health and well being of their customer?
You CAN find healthy food, it just costs you more..people cannot afford what businesses charge for healthy food served quickly, that is why you see the majority of market share going to firms who sell cheap crap..McDonalds, Wendy's, BK. Even stepping slightly up isnt much better..Subway is middle of the road garbage, they are better than McD's but relative to price they are not serving high quality ingredients.
People do not have the time, money or energy to prepare healthy, quality meals. Most people dont know what is healthy and what is not, most dont know that the produce you buy in the grocery store contains a multitude of pesticides (I fall in that trap, I could do better buying higher quality produce), most people dont look at food labels and see that they are eating refined flour, hydrogenated oils, refined sugars, corn extracts, chemical extenders and conditioners and preservatives. Most people buy what they can afford, not what is best for them to consume.
Who bears the responsibility to educate, to teach people how to shop and cook and know what they are buying and consuming?
People are ignorant because ignorance means profits, the less people know the more they can be taken.
I worked for a time at a car joint in a suburb of Philly, sold a large line of cars..the more uneducated the customer, the more money it meant for the dealer and salesman..the more dire their credit situation or their financial situation the more money to the dealer and salesman.
Greed...
i completely disagree with your notion that healthy food costs more than fast food.
i used to be very diligent about my diet, as in i would track and evaluate it....
that being said, i still eat very healthy, i make just about every meal during the week except for some weekend dinners/lunches. i also live in boston where food is insanely expensive, as in $1.89 for a dozen large eggs or $4 for a loaf of non cheap enriched flour white bread. but making my food is so much cheaper than eating at mcd's, even if it just $1 menu items.
the same ppl whose diet consist of mcd's are the same ppl who shop at rent a center and waste money on superfluous shit when they could have paid a bill with that money.
some ppl are just incapable of learning 'good from bad' whether that is bc they are too dumb or too ignorant.

I also completely disagree with your comment (shocking) about encouraging stabbing remarks. How exactly does that add to the discussion?
Covers has an area where people can fight and trade jabs, that is the penalty box. Outside the box, the politics forum is probably the only other forum we allow the stuff that goes on here.
What is the benefit of personal attacks in a debate/discussion? That is a tactic that people who are losing use. When there is no response then you attack and turn the discussion personal.

re-read the post again.
I said the cost of eating out at a place that serves healthy food is more than eating at McD's. People have to make a choice between quantity and quality, it is very tough to find healthy fast food, let alone that is affordable.
Also, you are right that buying the "raw" components of food is less expensive than going out to eat, which is why I mentioned TIME and skill being issue..people dont have the time with both parents (or one in the case of single parent families) to spend the time preparing a healthy meal, and where are people learning how to healthily prepare meals? I think tom said it was the FDA's job to educate how to buy and prepare healthy food..lol
I agree with you that it has plenty to do with the intelligence of the consumer, which is exactly what business wants..they want to provide a cheap, unhealthy product to an uneducated consumer.

Why is it that all of these companies shipping manufacturing plants overseas keep the principle headquarters in the U.S.? Why is that?
Why are we the only country that allows the tax rate of the company to be based solely on headquarters and not where the product is being produced or where the majority of the companies various operating facilities are located...without a separate tariff or tax?
Since I know someone is going to point out the ra ra USA as the response (sounds like something SteveShane would say since he is incapable of an actual articulate argument despite his self-proclaimation of being smarter than 98% of the population)...take a look at our deficit.

first off, that wasnt anything close to a scolding, please dont talk to me about drawing conclusions, when i was at least drawing one that was actually there and didnt pull something out of thin air
secondly, if you are an adult and cant take a joke, especially on the internet, then you have problems. did you ever see grand torino? that must have really really gotten your panties in a bunch.
thirdly, levity is what is brought to the table with sarcastic comments.
forthly, is it your position that a sarcastic stabbing remark is only applicable when a behavoir pattern has been established?
fifthly, do you realize you always divert when you are called out?
sixthly, by your lack of apology, can i believe that you feel your comments were not out of line for a mod?

I also completely disagree with your comment (shocking) about encouraging stabbing remarks. How exactly does that add to the discussion?
Covers has an area where people can fight and trade jabs, that is the penalty box. Outside the box, the politics forum is probably the only other forum we allow the stuff that goes on here.
What is the benefit of personal attacks in a debate/discussion? That is a tactic that people who are losing use. When there is no response then you attack and turn the discussion personal.
first off, that wasnt anything close to a scolding, please dont talk to me about drawing conclusions, when i was at least drawing one that was actually there and didnt pull something out of thin air
secondly, if you are an adult and cant take a joke, especially on the internet, then you have problems. did you ever see grand torino? that must have really really gotten your panties in a bunch.
thirdly, levity is what is brought to the table with sarcastic comments.

I agree with you that it has plenty to do with the intelligence of the consumer, which is exactly what business wants..they want to provide a cheap, unhealthy product to an uneducated consumer.
i did re read it, you dont specify when you say "they cannot afford better food" that you meant restaurant food. even if you did, most non fast food restaurants serve unhealthy foods also, its just not the same saturated fat and trans fat levels.
and if we are talking about affordability, why are we talking about ppl going out to eat? cooking costs < eating out.
no one taught me how to make a healthy meal, its not like its hard. heres one meal, grill a chicken breast, microwave a potato (a quick way to make a baked potato) and some canned vegetable. that takes 15 minutes start to finish to make.

who stands to gain what from higher corporate taxes?
Why are we so against allowing 'water to find it's level'?
America is supposed to be the greatest, if some illiterate foreigner can 'steal' your job and do it for a small fraction of the cost, we should all be for that. We should strive for something better,,,,,,

I'm sure if tikitom were here he would whole heartedly agree with your brilliance
