It's called a retention strategy ..how are you going to get/keep managers, that will deal with this Union mess..(if you don't give us what we want.. we will put you out of business) .. along with the other 2/3's of the workers that agreed to comproimise..
When CEO Greg Rayburn a “restructuring expert”, took the helm of the company in April, he had four of those top eleven executives at the company agree to reduce their salary to $1 per year, another four agreed to return to their previous six-figure salaries, and four others..quit...............As part of the deal, the offer to the unions included wage, benefit and work rule concessions but also gave them a 25% ownership stake in the company, representation on its Board of Directors and $100 million in reorganized Hostess Brands' debt...
The bakers' union would rather have no job than take less pay to survive... Well in this environment ..good luck finding another job ..

FarQue,
a United States Bankruptcy Court Judge approved Hostess’ motion to impose changes to collective bargaining agreements with the Bakery Union ..
Hostess received court permission to impose a pay-cutting measures to the collective bargaining agreement ...The Judge also approved motions that allow Hostess to impose changes to both those BCTGM collective bargaining agreements that are still in effect and to another 18 that expired earlier this year.
It's obvious the bakers were misled,by their Union bosses into thinking someone would come in at the eleventh hour and buy the company....

But, don't cry to long for the poor Bakers ..... America now has 44,000 more public sector union members..now that TSA has unionized.. the newly unionized airport screeners will now be able to have a say about what they wear on the job ( shorts when it's hot and “Ike” jackets when it's cold ), the shifts they work and the time off they take, whether they can change from part-time to full-time work or back to full time ...There was no mention of nose rings..
Now,, the TSA is something that is "Bush's fault"................

Blame the workers. That's hilarious. It's obvious that this camel's back needed to be broken. More correctly, it was already broken.
Managment is scapegoating workers to cover the company's own failures to perform successfully in the marketplace. Wages is just one of the many market factors at work here.
Management had a product that was out of favor with the public, a marketing strategy that hadn't worked in some time and a business model that was unsustainable. Blaming the workers for saying, "We'd rather work for somebody else than at low wages for these jerks" is like taking England's side when Patrick Henry said "Give me liberty or give me death!" Workers--unionized or not--have the right to reject an offer. It's just business.

You do realize that any employees in plants are around heavy machinery all day.
We have progressed beyond the point of 65 year-old ladies adding the cream filling by hand.
Perhaps if you shut off Fox news and left your apartment once in a while, you might see how much progress our society has made. ![]()

The Teamsters union (who have not been adverse to thug tactics and strikes in the past),was sharply critical of the smaller Bakers’ decision to strike, saying it was forcing the company to the cusp of liquidation.
The Teamsters were urging the smaller Bakers union to hold a secret ballot on whether to continue striking. Citing its financial experts who had access to the company’s books, the Teamsters say that Hostess’ warning of liquidation is “not an empty threat or a negotiating tactic” but a certain outcome if workers continued striking...
Today the Baker union (BCTGM) members were still picketing outside Hostess Brands Inc. bakery in Peoria, Illinois ..one sign read :
Hostess dug the hole.. BCTGM put them in the box.. we're bring'n the shovel..

Hostess Mediation Fails, Liquidation To Proceed;
Furious Laid Off Workers Now Turn On Labor Union..............
Hostess workers criticized Frank Hurt, the 20-year president of the
bakers union, who defended his decisions and actions during the
company's bankruptcy process.( with a union president with a last name "Hurt" they should have know they were in for a problem )
Scott Quenneville, a Hostess truck driver represented by the Teamsters, said he feels his colleagues were misled by Mr. Hurt into believing that a buyer would swoop in for the company. Mr. Hurt on Sunday said he thought there was a good chance a buyer would emerge who would give union members their jobs back.
"Frank misled a lot of people. He was not going to settle for anything less than closing the company down, because they didn't want that 8% pay cut," said Mr. Quenneville. "If you don't want the job, leave the job. Why ruin 18,000 jobs
