Can't say I really blame them too much. Before Bill Wirtz passed away and his son took over, the Hawks were considered to be one of the worst franchises in sports.
Bill banned all Blackhawks home games from being televised unless they were being broadcast nationally. He felt it was 'unfair' to those who paid to come watch the team in person. At the same time, he also jacked up ticket prices an average of $50 to watch a shi**y team that he invested very little in.
Talk about pissing people off!
No wonder he was considered one of the greediest owners in all of sports.
Great post, all good points.
As a huge Hawks fan myself, I would admit the Hawks fans aren't the best in the league. They're very good and have gotten better in the past several years but I don't think they're to the level of the Leafs, Canadians, or even the..... Hurts to say... Wings.
To me, it seems like the last several years have not just been people gaining interest in the Hawks, but people in Chicago rediscovering hockey or discovering it for the first time. There was such a long drought of bad teams, there was almost an age gap in fans. The fans from back in the days of the Magnuson, Hull, Esposito, and Mikita will always be there. But nowadays you see the younger generation REALLY getting into the Hawks and idolizing Kane and Toews. It's great to see.

I agree that we may not be as passionate as Canadian fans but Detroit fans. As the famous espn nfl Sunday highlight segment says C'mon Man! Go watch a regular season game in the shitiest city in America next to Gary In. And the seats r half empty. Blackhawks fans travel better than anybody. Go watch when they play Nashville Phoenix Colorado Tampa Bay or even LA and Hawks jerseys will many times outnumber the home team. Go Hawks, I love shin pads!

Any Wings games In any of those horrid hockey towns and it's a Wings home game. The "Let's Go Red Wings!" chants drown out the home crowd.
Did you see the Anaheim series? One game they showed the OT winner being scored from the vantage point of the crowd, from the corner of the ice......all Red and White and Wings fans, in both corners and behind the net.
This doesn't happen in the diehard cities, but in the ones you mentioned, it's a Wings home game.
