Had a little extra dough in the account so I pulled the trigger on two modest bets:
2 units KC Chiefs under 10.5 wins
2 units Dolphins over 9 wins
Usually like to wait to see what Warren Sharp says and how injuries play out, but also liked the earlier numbers and didn’t want the numbers to change. (Was looking at AZ Cards over 8.5 but then it bumped up to 9.)
I like unders more than overs because it’s easier for things to go wrong instead of everything going right. That being said, I like the Dolphins new HC and roster moves. Miami is the new SF South zone run scheme, and Tua is in a contract year.

See the Bears are at 6, and the over is -130. They are going to be terrible this year. Gonna wait and see if that win total gets bumped up to 6.5 and then will pound the under.
According to NFL XM’s Pat Curwin and Jim Miller, their OL is a tire fire. Gonna run a lot of 21 personnel with two TE sets just to have the extra blockers. Gonna be a long year in Chitown, while everyone else in the division is in a better situation than Da Bears.

Better than Flores? Or you are not comparing the two and just saying you like McDaniel? If so, why?

I like McDaniel and think the new roster moves pair well with his scheme. And yes, I do like his offensive gameplan more than Flores, who only got them to score more than 20 points twice in Weeks 1-8 last year for a horrendous 1-7 start (and the one game they won was 17-16). Granted, Tua T was out for some of that, but their offense was flat out inconsistent even when they won games. That is evident in their 34-3 drubbing by Tennessee in Week 17, which crushed their playoff hopes. Can’t win many games in today’s NFL with less than 22 ppg.

I was curious about the number of rookie coaches with 10 regular season wins since 2009: 12. Less: 49. So the fish have a chance. Of course most of that is with 16 game seasons. With 17: 0-6.

I agree about the scoring part. But I think by most accounts Flores was doing good with the team and I felt was a decent enough player’s coach. I just do not like changing coaches and schemes so often in a young QBs career. Same with Jags and Lawrence. But I could see more of a change being needed there because he had lost the locker room. But, maybe my main issue is with Tua. I am not so sure he is the guy. I like him, but he does not seem to be developing enough. maybe you are right about the off-season changes and new coaching and scheme. But how often do you see this with a young QB and it does not work out. They weren’t scoring because of a young QB that really is not all that good and weak personnel. Now with a good draft and off season moves — I think Flores would have made better strides than a new coach will. Your thoughts on Tua and the way the change will mess with him?

I think McDaniel will bring an easier, more QB-friendly scheme for Tua with more talent at the RB and WR positions and OL positions (6 new upgrades on offense at least). Last few years the Phins had weird roster issues. And this is the same Tua who won 8 of his last 9. Flores had an inconsistent scheme and was saddled with a weird roster. I’d rather go with the coach who was successful with the flawed Jimmy G and the current improved roster any day of the week.

Reason why I believe the scheme will be easier is zone run involves a lot of power runs and emphasizes horizontal passing routes that require quick passes. It protects the QB against crushing hits, and also can turn the game into a track meet by forcing defenders to chase someone like Tyreek Hill or Raheem Mostert or Jaylen Waddle across the field in coverage. Flores used a lot of 21, ie two TEs and one RB. McDaniel favors use of a FB instead which as SF has proven to be effective against the likes of Aaron Donald (SF beat the Rams 2/3 last year). So that’s why I’m bullish on the Phins, their new HC and roster additions were done in sync. I felt like the prior roster and HC scheme weren’t as in sync, which is part of Flores’ complaint tbh - he felt he didn’t get his guys. McDaniel has gotten his guys for his scheme.

Tua at Bama threw some nice passes down the field, of course he had time and the receivers to beat the defenders. Should be an improved O-line and having sum guy by the name of Hill, it should open up their passing, which was far too conservative, but they didn't have the players to execute. With Waddle and Gesicki too, they do now, remains to be seen but you know they'll play good defense again. I'm bias but I like the Fins to be much improved and slide into the playoffs this season. 11 wins is not out of the question.

Yeah, you make good points. I think that works with the theme that a) they tried drafting an entire new OL in 2019-2020 and b) this off-season cut the guys who weren’t good enough and replaced them. In other words, 3/5 of the line is young, and 5/5 should be strong.
Add in a FB and remove the second TE and add in motion with TE/Speedy WR/RB with lots of horizontal routes and suddenly you have an offense that’s so easy to use that you and I could easily pick it up on Madden this year. And that’s the point, now they have the talent and the right scheme. If Gesicki is capable of playing like George Kittle, they will give him the opportunity to do that this year. And if he can’t, that’s fine, they’ll direct more of those targets elsewhere.
Flores was trying to make Gesicki and TE Adam Shaheen dual threats in a 21 scheme. But why use two TEs when you can have three WRs (2 of which are absolute burners) and potential burners at RB? Add in a strong OL and you have an offense that will average 23+ a game, which would get them to the 11+ wins you talked about. No need to go into it in great detail here, but they have good depth too on this roster.

I understand what you are saying and mostly agree with you. I just am not sold on Tua. I think I would have given Flores another year to build the offense up -- which they were going to do either way. Now, what do you if you are the Dolphins front office and you under perform where your expectations are now that you have made all of these changes?
@mrusso
I think this is some perception. I think it had to be conservative because Tua seems limited to me. For sure, getting Hill and upgrading the line and changing the scheme should help. But what do you do if 3 or 4 games into the season Tua seems overwhelmed?
Maybe I am wrong and this is exactly the fix for the Dolphins. I still see them at 3rd in the division and missing the playoffs. But the division should be tighter so maybe they can finish in the top two if things really go well for them.
