Covers consensus picks provide a rough idea of public betting. Also top 10% and expert picks too. Fading the public is based on the assumption that most gamblers lose money in the long run. But the public tends to be right or wrong roughly 50% of the time. Therefore either fading or following the public might be unprofitable eventually.

A "good" bookie doesn't want to gamble. He wants to split the public 50/50, and make his profit off the vigorish. The public loses money when they pick 50/50, but that doesn't mean that the "public is mostly wrong".
There is an article on this site called "Learn to Identify Steam Moves" by Doc Sports, dated 01-23-2007 at:
Also on this website is a "Consensus" tab that will show the percentage of people picking one side or the other. It also shows the year-to-date money bet on that team. I haven't tried it myself, but subtract last weeks number, and you should have the amount bet this week. It all depends on how often the administrators of this web site update that number. You can send them an e-mail and ask.
Unless you're working in a sports book, I don't think you would have access to the information that you're looking for. Even then, I don't know if it would do you any good. How many Vegas employees working in sports books get rich using this information?
I still think it's a bad idea, but good luck with it anyway. Hope this helps.
