2. Polamalu
3. Dennis Smith
4. Mark Carrier
5. Taylor Mays!  Ok, too early

Ed Reed doesnt come up and support the run game like Ronnie Lott did in his playing days.  So therefore Lott was better as an all around player.  If Reed doesnt make a big interception and run around all over the place to score, sometimes you may forget he is even in the game because of his lack of being involved in run support.

Ed Reed is a ball hawk! Very good when he gets the football, however...

Ed Reed is not so good at tackling lately. He has quite a few whiffs in the playoffs.

He also does not support the run defense well. IMO

i think that all of these guys would have something to say in regards to being the best safety ever:

ken houston
paul krause
emlen tunnell
larry wilson
willie wood
mel renfro

what do they have in common? they're all the members of the pro football hall of fame who played the safety position. unfortunately for those guys the players today are all bigger, faster and stronger. for that reason the players listed below are all "better".

already picked ronnie lott as the best safety ever in my opinion, but here's my list of runner-ups (in order):

rod woodson
brian dawkins
ed reed
troy polamalu
rodney harrison

honorable mention:

sean taylor (may have gone on to become the best ever)
bob sanders (needs to stay healthy to join the list above)
adrian wilson (the guy is a beast...has better career #'s than troy p)

what about that Lott guy who used to play safety?
-five seasons with more than 100 tackles
-10 Pro Bowls
-inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000
-All-Decade Team for the 1980s and 1990s
- led the league in interceptions twice during his career, and is sixth on the league's all-time list with 63
-Asked one time what it would be like for an average person to be hit by Lott, he responded: "Grab a football, throw it in the air, and before you catch it, have your best friend belt you with a baseball bat. No shoulder pads. No helmet. Just you, your best friend and the biggest Louisville Slugger you can find."

Ed Reed
- never came close to 100 tackles in a season
-needs 5 more pro bowls to reach Lott
-needs around 20 more ints to reach Lott

Not only is Reed not the best safety of all time, he wasn't the best safety on the field tonight.

Reed best S ever. Period. I agree.

Troy may be just as great before hes dones though. Hes a little overvalued today because he swayed the $ to Pitts (as well as putting the game over). ha ha

Thanks to whoever brought this thread back to life.  I was about to file a missing person's report in regards to Ed Reed,  Just in case you were wondering TS, Troy's performance is how great safeties step up their performance in big games.
