Why Do People Continue to Discount the Celtics?

The Celtics eliminated the #1 team in basketball

The Celtics eliminated the #2 team in basketball

The Celtics (+4.6 points per 100 possessions) have a higher efficiency rating differential than the Lakers (+3.3 points per 100 possessions) despite playing a much tougher schedule in the playoffs.

Why do people think that the #3 team in basketball will eliminate the Celtics, trailing a series 2-3 headed into Game 6?

For the Lakers to win, they will have to pull of a historic, unprecedented feat as teams trailing 2-3 headed into Game 6 have never won the NBA Title.

I'm not saying history cannot be made, because if the Celtics win they will have made history, but I see the Lakers getting a lot more love around here.

how many of those teams trailing 3-2 were playing both games at home, had the best home record during the regular season and best home record during the playoffs?

didnt the rockets win against the knicks being down 2-3?

First off, people think the Lakers can win because they are AT HOME for BOTH GAMES. People don't think the Celts can lose 3 games. I'm not saying it can't happen, i'm just giving you their reasoning.

Second of all, there are several teams that have recovered from a 3-2 NBA Finals deficit. 1994 Knicks, 1988 Lakers, 1978 Bullets etc. 2 of these have happened since the 2-3-2 format in the Finals. The Lakers are heavily favored in both games and will have the refs on their side in game 6 IMO.

So please don't say people are discounting the celtics. I see so much Celtics cock pride on this site I could vomit. If anything, people are discounting the Lakers.

Yes Wallet they did.....and on ESPN this a.m. they cited that another team had done it too.

But I guess the spirit of this thread is it is extremely difficult to do.

I think when it has been accomplished, it was in this exact situation scenrio that the lakers have.......which is the team that is trailing 2 games to 3 is returning home for the final 2 games in their own back yeard.

It is amazing that the team returning home has not won two games in a row to claim the title more often than just twice.....or maybe the scenario hasn't happened that much.

I'm sure the ABC crew will inform us of these trends tonight.

I have not seen much hype for the Celtics on this forum.

The Celtics were also a 63% road team and (if they win) will be the only team to ever win the title with a road record better than home record.

The Lakers alleged home court superiority is moot, imo.

The statistic that was stated was that when a series is tied 2-2 and the home team loses (meaning that they are headed on the road for two games with a 2-3 deficit), they have never won.  That statistic is moot since the Celtics won Game 5.

can anyoe remember the series line for the mavs-heat 4 years ago? also the series line after game 5? this may be off topic, but i'd like to see a comparison between the series price of the lakers compared to the the heavily favored mavs a couple of years back.

The Mavericks were favored headed back into Dallas but it was a slight favorite.  I think -130.

And remember, the perception was that the Heat was the lesser of the two teams, on paper anyway, and we saw how that turned out.

Funny you bring that up because the line for Game 6 in that series  was the exact same as it is for Game 6 tonight.  I believe the Heat won 95-92.

I don't really think people are discounting the Celtics...I would think Stern is licking his chops at a possible game 7 between two historic franchises...Lakers will get the benefit of the whistle tonight....but if there is a 7, I would expect a very evenly called game...

Dallas was -200 and Miami was +180

I remember it well because I stated on covers that Miami would win the title that year.  The Heat was also +950 - +1100 (depending on the book) to win the title before the playoffs began.

Good point and I think that is what everyone and their mother thinks as well.  I'm interested to see how the game plays out.  I expect the Lakers to be hyped up and come out firing early but once the Celtics settle, down I expect a much closer game.

The Celtics are much tougher (mentally) than the Lakers.  Which team is going to fold first?  Whichever team you think will, is the team you want to go against.

I wouldn't discount Boston after tonight's ass whipping.  It's happened to them in this year's playoffs.

LA came out strong as I thought but they kept the pace and Boston was never able to make a run, which I expected them to do but they did not.

Wonder what the new series price is. It should be -300 LA since that is what the ML is sitting at so far
