They should amnesty Kobe if they can convince him to not play at all next season. An Achilles tear at his age likely means he won't play until January at the earliest, and the Lakers will be a bad team next year no matter how early he returns.
So, convince Kobe to take the whole season off to rehab, amnesty him, then resign him for two years as soon as the amnesty signing period allows them to pursue him. After all, Kobe's not going to play for any other team, so there is no danger of another team getting him.
