What you say is so very true.  I get a real kick out of people that participate but don't "gamble" in the stock market and cannot understand the desire to handicapp and place wagers.
 
My wife is not into gambling at all and does not overly like it when I buy individual stocks (all she does is criticize if they go down).
 
However, the thing that has taken the biggest hit is the "safe" play 401K mutual funds.
 
I laughingly told her "don't worry about a few hundred bucks at the poker game, or a few K in Vegas--it's the six figures we are down since last fall in the retirement fund that you should be apalled about.  But hey, she is going to outlive me anyway so I might as well have some fun.
 
And definetly agree about work--there is always some xxx that will use it against you.

Great topic I agree.  Sports betting is one of my creative outlets.  I enjoy watching sports, always have, and now I can have a piece of that action.  My wife absolutely hates it.  But there are plenty of things I hate that she spends money on.  I have built into my budget how much I can lose (in otherwords a bankroll).  If I withdraw then my bankroll increases if I reload then it decreases.  In either event this is entertainment for me.  The hours of time I spend researching and watching the games whether I win or lose it is entertainment.  If a win a little scratch on the side that is alright by me.  But since I bet several times each week I expect long term to break even at best.  I don't talk about it with co-workers or other family members either.  Perhaps because gambling has such a bad rap.  Of course anyone who knows me know that I love poker and blackjack too so I would suspect that this type of gambling would not be too surprising to them.

  My girl knows and so do most close to me because my job is basically gambling. So many know I gamble on a regular basis they just dont know to what extent.  I agree this place is great just to talk and discuss the betting side and not the sports side which are very different. I have learned a ton since joining/following.

This is a really conservative country. You should be careful about who you share your hobby with, especially at work. It cannot possibly HELP you there, so why take the risk. 
I also wanted to chime in and echo the thoughts of appreciation for the forum. I always peruse overs prior to making plays, and it always affects my plays positively. Thanks to this forum, I have not had a losing vegas trip in years!

I don't know anyone like myself.  I wager everyday!  I do ok but people think of me as a compulsive gambler. Maybe I am a compulsive sports better but I do well and hate slots and tables.

I try to explain to my co-workers that it's like trading stocks. Now everytime I pick up the sports page or talk sports I hear "Hey! You got a dime on that?"

Sure it is!   The society I live in (people I am surrounded by) are all gamblers, and its a blast watching games and scheming about the games.

Great post Vic... I am in the corporate world and they know I gamble.  I think it actually draws positive attention to me because I am known for doing in depth analysis and crunching numbers (both for work and sports).

Good thread. I agree with the thing about talking to others about my sports betting. I have learned after many many years to just keep it to myself. I really like that and found that it works for alot of things. These bashers that come in here are for the most part immature and need to grow up. When they lose some wagers they don't get their own way and lash out. Same way a kid does in a department store. We all seen them throwing their self down and screaming. Well thats what they do in here also. I just try to ignore them. When you respond to them that is what they want. GL

FAMILY, FRIENDS, SPOUSES, THEY DONT SAY SHIT WHEN THEY SEE, HEAR, OR ENJOY SPENDING THOSE CHECKS.  I NEVER LIKED TO GAMBLE....I WOULD GO WITH MY MOTHER AND WATCH HER DROP HUNDREDS IN SLOT MACHINES (WHICH IS A FUCKING LONG SHOT TO WIN, ALTHOUGH THIS WOMAN HAS WON TEN OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS DOING THIS) AND BE BORED OUT OF MY FUCKING MIND. I USED TO BOAST THAT MY GAME WAS ROULETT (RIGHT...FUCKING JOKE). NEVER WON MORE THAN A 500 TO 600.  AS MY SOCIAL STATUS INCREASED I GOT INVITED TO VEGAS WITH SOME OLDER GENTLEMEN THAT I DO BUSINESS WITH.  THEY TAUGHT ME HOW TO HANDICAP.  MY FIRST BET WAS AT THE PARIS....DROPPED 4K ON A COUPLE OF BETS.......AND I LOST.  WENT BACK UP TO MY ROOM AND STUDIED THE CARDS. WENT TO THE CAGE THREE TIMES THAT DAY AND CAUGHT A FLIGHT OUT WITH 15K IN MY POCKET AND WON MY OLD HEADS 25K. WHEN I GOT HOME I SET UP AN ONLINE ACCOUNT AND THE REST WAS HISTORY. I INVITED MY FRIENDS TO THE FOX SPORTS GRILL ONE DAY WITH LAPTOP IN HAND AND SHOWED THEM WHAT I WAS DOING I TAUGHT MY FRIENDS HOW TO READ THE LINES AND THEY SOON AFTER SET UP ACCOUNTS.  I CALL IT SUPPLEMENTAL INCOME.

Life is a gamble
Ive been on covers yrs. and seen many good and bad cappers come and go.i think it does take about 2-4 yrs to become a good capper, to read lines, building experience of what will happen in a certain situation, those are the days the books are in a big trouble.

Some good cappers go tout, set up their own website, some are driven out by idiots who follow religiously every pick and cant function with a loss.
The most fun is usually around nhl and nfl time when everyone seems to win.
For those that remain it covers remains a good source of information, a good place to learn the trade and give advice to others coming through.
There will be good days and bad but its fun nonetheless.
