I think there's a difference between 100 pitches and 120 pitches. For instance, looking back to Haren's following start after throwing 110+ pitches last year (most recent first):


After throwing 112 pitches on September 26th vs. San Diego... 6 IP 9 H 5 ER 1 HR 7:1 K/BB in San Francisco.

After throwing 119 pitches on August 14th vs. the Dodgers... 5 IP 9 H 6 ER 3 HR 6:1 K/BB in Philadelphia.


After throwing 117 pitches on July 28th vs. the Phillies... 7 IP 8 H 5 ER 1 HR 3:1 K/BB in Queens.


After throwing 113 pitches in St. Louis on July 18th... 5 IP 8 H 4 ER 1 HR 4:1 K/BB in Pittsburgh.


The question is more of a concern with the Arizona bullpen which didn't look any better yesterday as Boyer gave up the game winning run with a double to lead off the 8th and Qualls got the first 2 out then proceeded to give St. Louis insurance. Simply dreadful.

how about +220 pitches in his last 2 starts and +330 in his last 3 in conjunction with the bullpen?

In Haren's 7 starts last year of over 110 pitches, his next start resulted in 50 innings, 39 hits, 15 earned runs (2.70 era), and a 50:9 K:BB ratio. I didn't see it as that big of a concern so early on.

Re-did those numbers:

10 starts last year coming in off higher pitch counts than 110 pitches. Results:

70 1/3 innings, 56 hits, 21 earned runs  (2.67 era) and a 67:10 K:BB ratio.

All those starts came after the all star break....  He will be fine tonite...The under is the best play...

Pitt has an excellent home record...5-1...good value...if they can keep the brew crew in the ball park..

Their pitching has been truly awful .  I don't see that changing in the near future.  Should be some runs in that game tonight.

Like the card, I just can't take the Pirates. Charlie Morton is one of the worst pitchers in all of baseball. That guy flat-out grooves pitches. BOL with your picks though.

I say all the better....    See here's the deal, (this is going to totally piss some folks off)  this whole pitch count phenom. is the most overrated and misquoted change in baseball over the past 20-30 years....  I've never seen anyone present evidence that pitch 101, (or 111 or 121) does any more damage or cause more injuries than the previous ones...  

As a matter of fact I would argue that the two main reasons why this pitch count obsession has taken off is (a) the sports media loving the idea of having a reason (or someone,,,ie managers) to blame pitchers arm injuries on,, it brings into the mix a bad guy and a feeling that these injuries are controllable if a certain preconcieved formula is followed..  What manager/owner in his right mind is going to buck this and take a chance on being blamed for any arm injury...  no reward there.

(b)  Player agents... They buy into this and will cerainly use it to pressure management.   Threatening to make sure to scream "labor abuse" if their client goes over to many pitches a game.  Hell I heard part of Strabergs contract has how many piches he's going to be allowed to throw...  WTF?  why not ban him from taking a bat with him to the plate.  

I have so much more I believe about this,, but I've already gone on too much in GH thread....   Recapping,,, I like Haren tonight
