how is cain the starter over dickey?

cain gives the NL a better chance at winning... Dickey will get hit hard when he comes into pitch.

it was tony larussa's call, it really should have been dicky but I think the only reason he picked cain was because of his perfect game this year

Cain is better than Dickey. The question is, why is Pablo Sandoval starting over David Wright???

That's not why...

Cain has pitched in bigger games then Dickey, he has more experience in big games. The NL obviously wants to win for home field advantage in the World Series. Starting with Cain gives the NL that chance. You could argue until your blue in the face whose better Cain or Dickey on a pure skill level, but when it comes to pitching in a big game, it's Cain... He has delivered (check out his 2010 playoff stats and what he did against Texas in the WS) He simply gives the NL the better chance at winning this game and since the all star game has something on the line now... you go with the guy who has proven himself for a longer period of time

One of the reasons could have been or probably had to do with the fact that dickey was a knuckleballer and the manager wanted to start posey off with a more conventional pitcher.  It also helped that Cain and posey are teammates as well.

that is also a good point... I just read an article... La Russa liked the fact Cain and Posey could start it off and that Dickey would most likely pitch when Ruiz comes in the game

2169 is right again.  The only reason Dickey is not starting is Posey can't catch a knuckle ball.

Dickey was the best pitcher in baseball during the first half and is a great story to even those who don't follow baseball very closely. Give the guy some credit and the start he deserves. I don't care if it will be difficult for Buster to catch him. Let them get a few practice sessions in there and get things cohesive. It's tough for anyone to catch a knuckler and even tougher for the hitters to make contact with. Posey will have to catch him at some point in the game if he is still batting so what's the difference?

@Messiah...I was listening to an interview with everyones favorite, Mike Francesa.  They had some baseball insider on.  This was 2 weeks ago, and they said back then.  Posey would probably screw the whole game up for NL if he caught Dickey.  It would have been a great story, but Posey is the starting catcher, so LaRussa had his hands tied.  As a Mets fan I would have loved to see R.A., but when I heard this...I knew.

because giants fan flooded the voting, cain is the only deserving starter, the rest of them could be all stars but not starters, david wright has been WAY better than kung fu panda

Excellent point. This is a very big game for the NL

sure, dickey's a great story, but he's had a great 3 months, that's it...

cain has been a 200-inning horse since '06 with at least some semblance of a consistent resume: DD Ws in  3 straight yrs...

posey may in fact be in the game long enough  to catch dickey "at some point".and im sure he won't embarrass himself..but IMO cain's year so far plus his entire body of work make him the legitimate choice to start

   How can you be mad that Dickey is not starting the all-star game? THREE guys with a better ERA (Dempster, McDonald. and Beachy) were not even selected..True, Dempster and Beachy are/were hurt, but they deserved the recognition and could have easily been replaced..
Dickey has no gripe whatsoever, at least he is in the game!
