G-finger, agree about Crawford, he's stepped his game to the top level this year. Definitely in the conversation, just comes down to how the team ends up. He's been healthy all year, which probably separates him from Jason Bartlett who has missed some games this year but has been incredibly clutch and extremely productive. I'd bet if you asked Crawford who the team MVP has been, he would say Bartlett, but if you asked Bartlett, no doubt it would be Crawford. Again, they have to make the playoffs for genuine consideration, and it starts tonight with a huge 3 game set @ home vs the Rangers.

Just to add to this...

Tampa had one of the top 5 picks in the MLB draft for the better part of a decade. Players drafted usually do not get to the MLBs for 3-5 years and thus draft results are not seen until 5-10 years down the road.

Through very good scouting and player development the Rays were able to build a competitive team for minimal money since they always had top draft picks and those players stay under team control for 6 years.

In about 5 years you will see the Rays struggling if their star players decide to take more money and leave the Rays. Due to their success they will not be selecting in the top 5 and not getting those star players that have helped them become the Rays of this year and last year.

for all those who are that are factoring in (1) that Mauer missed a month and still put up huge numbers and (2) the "value" of a player to a team.............how does it change your opinion to know that the Twins have a better record WITHOUT Mauer playing than with him this season

Yeah, Bartlett's bat has been a huge surprise this year, however, his glove isn't what it was last year. I guess it is an even trade off perhaps. Granted Maddon should have had him hitting leadoff a long time ago, instead having him hit 8th or 9th, while Upton has been nothing but a problem up there. Took him long enought to make that move, geez. Yeah, huge series with Texas for sure!

And Jpero, you are spot on about your last spot.

The Royals had an 18-11 month.......a blind pig finds an acorn every once in awhile.

Maybe the Twins should bench Mauer for the stretch drive

That was also with Slowey and Perkins getting off to good starts....not to mention Blackburn.  Slowey is now hurt and the other 2 have tanked....replaced by Swarzack and Pavano.

That is why this stuff is impossible to judge.

I say Jeter because he has been solid since day. .331 batting average, almost surpassed every offensive stat that Pedroia had last season, is playing his best defense of recent memory, and aside from the Red Sox, he's hitting great against the teams that matter(.370 v Angels, .409 v Rangers, .462 v Phillies and .304 v Rays, along with hitting .300+ against 12 of the 18 teams he's played against). He's the MVP in my mind.

Have you seen Mauers numbers ??? Kid is batting 380 and is doing a damn good job behind the plate.....

No way that Jeter should win it....I could see Tex winning as he has really been great this year.....My pick and I hate to say it is Joe Mauer.

Mmac, You are right, if Mauer hits .400 and 40 HR's, he will win, and if he didn't with those no's, it would be the greatest injustice in the game, perhaps ever

However, to say the Rayz' won't be able to compete 5 years down the road, well, we're getting way ahead of ourselves to say that about any team. Gfinger is right they've got their young talent contractually locked up, and they are much younger than their primary competition the Yanks' and the Red Sox. If it's looking into a crystal ball you like, you better look at the Baltimore Orioles in the next 2-3 years. They have some outstanding young talent, Jones, Weiter, Markakis, and some solid young pitchers as well. They are a Rayz' clone right now, and they'll tell you exactly that...

Value doesnt mean that you took your team to the playoffs.....The Value means who has done the most for his team. If you take them off of the team then how does the team do ???

Just imagine Mauer in the Yanks or Sox lineup right now   .......I actually did not like Mauer untill about 2 or 3 weeks ago. The kid has really grown on me and his numbers as a catcher are ridiculous....And add in the number of games he missed with injury.   I know your next comment is about A-fraud, but Mauer is doing this as a catcher and in Minny.......380

Sparky......

Please read over what you just said.....Mauer isnt valueable enough to his team to win the award  .   He is catching, batting 380, hit almost 30 bombs, etc etc

Several on here would disagree that Mauer should win with those numbers because his team didn't make the postseason. That is my point, at some point the numbers have to matter and if they matter at .400 and 40 HR's why don't they matter at .385 and 30 HR's......that's all.

As for my point on the Rays, I didn't mean to imply that they would not compete in 5 years. They appear to be set up very well to compete. I just wonder if they will........as good as they are they are definitely on the outside looking in this season. If things don't get better they start "making moves" to compete with Boston and NY......I  hope they do compete, but color me skeptical.

Hell, I was in KC with a young outfield of Beltran, Dye and Damon......not too bad. That didn't turn out so well.  The Orioles to look primed for success. Hopefully everyone pans out. What I know for certain is that the Yankees payroll will dwarf the rest of the league, leaving only a very few teams that can truly compete year in and  year out......and for that baseball is worse off.

This has been a fun thread. Nice to see everyone stay cool and have a reasonable argument. That isn't found much on this site or anywhere else in this day and age. It's somewhat refreshing. Thanks to all of you

The award is Most Valuable Player.  Not most valuable player on a playoff team.  Baseball is a team sport.  A player could have the best season in the history of the sport and play on a team that does not even finish 500.  Likewise, you could have a pitcher that throws a perfet game every time out for 32 starts and his team could still end the season 32-130.  How well a guys team does should not take away from how great a season an individual player might have had.

Because it is a team sport, there is no cerrelation between how great a player is to how good his team is that year.  He is only 1 of 9 on the field and 1 of many more when you factor in bench players and bullpens.

a few other tidbits,
-not sure how u can consider jeter as an mvp when his numbers are very similar to bartletts. so the arguement can be made that not only is jeter not the mvp in his own team (texiara), but he may not even be the most valuable shortstop in the AL(bartlett).

-mauer(who would get my vote) has been putting up ridiculous numbers in a lineup that includes on an everyday basis:
  carlos gomez-.230 ba
  nick punto-.200ba
  brendan harris-.265ba
  alexei casilla-.180ba
-mauer is the best all around catcher in the al and nobody is even close to him when u include all aspects of the game

-one last bit is im not sure how nobody has even mentioned miguel cabrera from detroit, who has put up ridiculous numbers in a lineup that is pure garbage outside of him.

-my vote 1.Mauer  2.Cabrera  3. Jeter/Tex (tied)

lets make it most valuable team shall we.
Ok yankee allstars- (w/o pitchers)
Jorge Posad (4)
Robinson cano (1)
Mark Teixeira (2)   and moving around the infield.....
Derek Jeter (10)
Alex Rodriguez (12)
johnny Damon (2)
hideki matsui (2)

twins Allstars...(w/o pitchers)
Joe Mauer
Justin Morneau
Joe Crede
The arguement that tex/jeter are more valuable to thier team than Mauer is just a joke.

Plus Mauer is a catcher power hitting first basebaseman are dime a dozen.(thus mauers "Value" increases"

No Love for Abreu!? As tough as it is to pick just ONE person from htat line up, I mean Figgins has been amazing along with Morales and Rivera! Aybar has not been too shabby either, But I just feel like this is guy just a perfect player. Can Run the bases play the field has a great arm and is consistently batting 300 plus every year! Absolutely love this guy, takes pitches every at bat makes you work gets on base, drives in runs, yeah power numbers aren't so high so thats about his only flaw in my opinion! All around great player and having an outstanding year once again.
