in a league with no salary cap so the big market teams can spend as much as they want to me it only seems right to give the MVP awards to guys who's team may not be in contention. I view it is league MVP, who is the best player in that league not neccesairly the player that helped him team to get into the playoffs. That's what the world series mvp is for.
in any case, i think you have to give it to Mauer, playing catcher and putting up those numbers in that lineup is insane.

absolutely no bias here, BUT;

Joe Mauer and its not even close, lets not forget he missed thefirst month to start the year and came out like he did. He plays with a lineup half as good as the Yankees and the fact that his team is even mentioned in a division race still is amazing considering how bad they have become. The guy catches games and will hit at .365 with 30plus HR. Amazing.
My second pick is Michael Young. This guy has led Texas this year with Hamilton struggling into a wild, wild card race now with Boston. Night after night this underrated converted shortstop comes through with a big hit and is about as clutch as they come. I cant think of anyone in the AL besides these two with my bet on the line and runners on 2nd and/or 3rd down a run who i would rather have up. They are both clutch, both professional, both play on competetive teams and dont have the "YankeeRedSox money" protection in the order.
Plus that Yankee park is a joke, especially for lefties. I mean that porch in right is like a little league park. I turned the game off when i twice have seen Johnny Damon poke his bat out and hit a homer.
Texiera HOME .308avg 19HR AWAY .258avg 12HR
Jeter HOME .319avg 11HR AWAY.343 4HR
Mauer HOME .400avg 13HR AWAY .360avg 12HR
Young HOME .355 10HR AWAY.283 10HR
Mauer gets my vote, sorry Sparky and I am completely unbiased on this one considering i am a tiger guy and left miggy off the list.

The argument that his team will not go to the playoffs and jeters will is bogus, Jeters supporting cast is far better than the Twins. One player cannot carry a whole team, but Mauer has done anything and everything to improve his team. Jeter has had a great season as well as Tex, but the person that is Most Valuable to their team is Joe Mauer by a landslide.

Mauer is a sold pick too, however, he can't even get his team to play .500 ball. Without Crawford's numbers this year, TB would be below .500 too. Yankees can still win without Jeter or Tex.

Mauer should win. Granted, his team won't make the playoffs -- but it won't be the first time it's ever happened where an MVP didn't make the playoffs.
His stats are WAY better than Jeter.
He hits for a better average, more homers, more RBI's, and four less runs than Jeter (and Jeter has Tex and ARod hitting behind him).
Mauer's team isn't over .500, but the Twins would be dead last with one of the worst records in all of baseball if Mauer wasn't on the team. Their pitching staff has been pathetic, and outside of the Morenau, who else do the Twins even have? Take Jeter off the Yankees, and they still make the playoffs.
IF you want the MVP to come from a playoff team, then Miguel Cabrera would be a better selection than Jeter, obviously. The stats don't even compare.

My vote would go to Joe Mauer.....teams making the playoffs is a factor but far from the only one in my mind......
In my opinion Mauer is a clear favorite, nobody else has numbers who compare. It's really not close in my opinion.
I think people have started to play word games with MVP vs MOP. I think somebody can be very valuable to their team without that team winning more than they lose or making the playoffs. Think how awful the Twins would be without Mauer......they would be playing in the neighborhood of the Royals and Nats.

The problem is...is the argument the most valuable player to the team? In that case, Mauer is, regardless of how his team has finished.
I think a team's finish should matter, but if you think about it, the Twins are "sort of" in contention. They aren't completely tanked like the Royals. If the Twins missed the playoffs but were close, I would give it to Mauer for almost getting his team there, but as the Twins continue to slip, I think Mauer's case gets weaker.
The thing is, they have a history of giving the MVP to the MOP as you call it, during a year where there is no clear frontrunner for the MVP. I believe this is one of these years. Like you said, DJ and Tex are two big candidates, but will their votes cancel each other out a bit? I think so...to some extent.
Well if it's the most valuable player of the team, I'd have to say Mariano is the most valuable player on the Yankees. He's available every game and if you can get the game to him, you have a win basically. The game isn't a guarentee win if a hitter comes to the plate.

Hence the reason why the name should be changed.

I agree. Ichiro is one of the best players in all of baseball. But with my philosophy, I wouldn't make him an "MVP" candidate.

You argue he is the most outstanding and not the most valuable which is just wrong. Without Mauer, the twins are battling it out with the Royals for last place in the division. As it stands they still have an outside shot at the division.
The Yankees would still be competeing for the division without Jeter. There are many guys on that roster who are having great years which makes them a great team but also makes the loss of one of those players less damaging. Tex is more valuable on that team and should be considered ahead of Jeter. Either way, its Mauer and it is not even close. The value he adds to the twins makes that team better than any 1 player adds to any other team in the AL.

I agree with Young, but like I said...I can't back Mauer because of the no-playoff philosphy I have. And you have to remember, Helton got an MVP before the humidor, so ballparks don't matter. It's not his fault he's playing in a Stadium that benefits him. I say Mauer is the BEST player in the AL right now. The problem is, he isn't bringing himself to the playoffs. I know he was out for a month, and maybe some will make that unfair, but thats the card we're dealt with.

Whats the difference with being 1 game out of the playoffs or 20 games out of the playoffs?

It's not much fun being a baseball fan in a small market. Our chances of winning a World Series is small. It can happen but it requires the stars to line-up and all your prospects and decisions to pan out at the same time. If we are going to make the MVP and other such awards contingent on making the playoffs then I think the game will further alienate much of it's fan base.
At what point would a player from a losing team merit consideration for this award? If they hit .400? Drive in 200 runs? Hit 70 home runs? A player can be very "valuable" to his team without them making the playoffs. The best player to me is inherently the most valuable to their team. If they are the "best" then how can they not be the Most Valuable? One player can't win a game for a team. Hell, Mauer could be hitting .500 and the Twins would still be out of the playoffs probably, how is that his fault?

Nothing at all but the award does not go to the most valuable team it goes to the most valuable palyer and without Mauer the Twins season would have been over months ago.
Just for argument sake, lets say the Cubs catch the Cards for the division and Colorado passes the Cards in the wild card because their pitching goes way south. Does that mean Pujols no longer deserves the MVP in the NL. That would be an absurd argument.

Which is why I think they should change the name of the award or add the Most Outstanding Player award. At the end of the season, if the Twins don't make the playoffs, do you think Mauer will say it was a successful season? I just don't see it.
