So who’s going to beat Orb? Can he be beaten? Orb is beginning to look like a horse for the ages seemingly being able to run on concrete if he had to do it.
What’s going to beat him—if he is beatable—might be the post position and having tomaneuver into an outside position to be able to get his closing trip. Rosario is as hot as anyone in the country right now and his skills have improved ions over the past two years or so. If Rosario stays healthy and clean, he too, will be one for the ages.
#Orb…..What a breathtaking stretch run he had coming from 18 lengths and beyond the clouds. Assuming he can get clear on the outside after some quick fractions (Goldencents, Titletown Five, IMLD likely to go out), Rosario could get him in the center path for a final run. Orb has raced out of the 1 hole three times winning the FOY. In his first two career races as a two-year old, he finished 4th at Belmont 22 L out and third in his debut losing by just over a length.
#2 Goldencents….He had a woeful Derby and we all know he’s better than that. I think his best chance to win is for Krigger to try to get the lead and slow down the pace, but I don’t think Titletown or one or two others will allow him. I questioned Krigger’s ability long before the Derby---not too many journeymen riders pop like he did with this colt---and I have to question how well he will maneuver Goldencents at this track. Certainly capable of winning, but it will take a great horse and piloting job to beat Orb. That said, after seeing his Derby, I will ask, “Who has he beaten?”
#4 Departing….An excellent horse, but, one again I must ask, “Who has he beaten?” I had him second in the Illinois Derby and I don’t see him in the same class as Or, IMLD, MyLute or even Oxbow on a good day. In fact, in the ILL Derby, against a field of decent, but vanilla opponents, he circled way wide before the win. Should be a decent underlay that might draw more money than deserved.

#5 Mylute….Rosie had a rough Derby weekend overall, but I thought she did well to get this guy into position to finish 5th in the big race. I think this horse is improving and could be the upsetter. Lest we forget that Pimlico is where Rosie cut her teeth before hitting the big-time, so she knows this track as well as anyone…… consider for a major piece ad maybe the win, if Orb grabs trouble and expect a fair amount of “Rosie money” on the horse. I will also argue that Mylute ran the second best Derby race. This could be the one……
#6 Oxbow….I am not sure which Oxbow will show up today, but if the good Oxbow does, he could be in for a good day. I really like what Stevens did with him in the Derby to finish 6th considering the stalking trip might have been his best chance to win the race. I wish I can say the horse was improving, but I think he can contend for a bronze medal.
#7 Will take Charge…..I thought this was a ton of horse early in the season, and he still might be. While I don’t think he is fast enough for most of these strange things seem to happen in the Preakness, so catching a piece would be no surprise.
#8 Governor Charlie…..A real nice horse with a bright future, but will the lite racing career hurt him here? One thing is sure is that this horse has speed and if Martin Garcia, who is an excellent rider, can employ a great tactical effort, he will be a factor. If he had one race off the foot injury, I think I could pick him to upset. A must-consider for Top Five.
#9 Itsmyluckyday…..His Derby was a trainwreck and it is somewhat typical of horses who have spent most of their careers in Florida.. That’s not a knock, but what a poor effort. Switching to Johnny V is a major plus and out of the 9 post, he will be moving upfront both out of necessity and because of his racing style. Can he win? Sure, but it will take a valiant effort…not impossible.
My picks:
ORB to win (gee…nothing like going out on a limb)
$40 towin on Mylute
I will try to beat him this way:
$15 exacta straight: 5 (Mylute)/1
$8 exacta wheel: 4,8,9/1

I love horseracing, I also love betting on horseracing. I do not have to bet every race. Today, I plan on sitting back and rooting for history. I have great memories of Affirmed ( Alydar would not pass him if they went around the track twice!) Orb's trainer and owner are the class of the sport. ORB-one step closer to history!

You like ORB ??? Looks like a One-n-Done Horse to me.
Look at Goldencents... a Santa Anita horse but can't race East of the Mississippi.
