Because of the speed and the violence of the NFL, it takes a special gene to make that step up from College, especially at the QB position. That's part of the reason I love the NFL because you never "really" know until a player is in the league for a couple years (for the most part). With that said, I think this kid is doomed.
I'm sure most of you saw the Mariucci interview where a pretty basic bootleg play was diagrammed, with simple progressions. Now, you have to know that when the play is erased from the board, you'll be asked to to duplicate. Well, GS didn't have a clue. Not a good good sign when trying to grasp complicated defensive schemes.
The situation in NY may precipitate him being on the field before he's ready, and although he's got a lot of great physical attributes, the panic that he'll experience in the pocket will be too much. A few blindside fumbles and forced INTs, combined with with a fragile psyche (IMO), will make for a short career.

Nolan Nawrocki is a draft expert for Pro Football Weekly and below is his assessment of Geno Smith.
Nawrocki adds this assessment of Smith: “Not a student of the game. Nonchalant field presence — does not command respect from teammates and cannot inspire. Mild practice demeanor — no urgency. Not committed or focused — marginal work ethic. Interviewed poorly at the Combine and did not show an understanding of concepts on the white board. Opted not to compete at the Senior Bowl and has approached offseason training as if he has already arrived and it shows in his body with minimal muscle definition or strength. Has small hands and glaring ball security issues (32 career fumbles). Really struggled handling the snow in Pinstripe Bowl (took two safeties) and will be troubled by the elements. Needed to be coddled in college — cannot handle hard coaching.”
Nawrocki then makes a strong prediction about Smith’s future. “Smith is a gimmick, overhyped product of the system lacking the football savvy, work habits and focus to cement a starting job and could drain energy from a QB room,” Nawrocki writes. “Will be overdrafted and struggle to produce against NFL defensive complexities.”
He had the same things to say about Newton, Griffin and Wilson. You can always find a negative if you look for it.

The only reason there was talk of him at three was because people don't like drafts where OLinemen are the feature picks (mainly because they don't know how to grade O-Linemen). So they throw a skill position player in there and the most prominent skill position is QB.
And to say this and that is comparable doesn't mean all those things come together when he's behind center. And they don't. They both played in the NEast at VTech and WV respectively and I can assure you, GSmith is not even a wart on Vick's behind in terms of franchise potential.
Vick is still in the league for a reason, at his age and after a prison stint. There's a reason for that...otherworldly talent and the ability to produce on the field.
I'll give the guy a chance but if Sanchez is starting in game 8, be wary (unless Sanchez has some sort of crazy revival).
I think you're reading what I'm saying wrong. I'm not saying he is the savior of the franchise, but I think he's going to surprise a lot of people. When I compare him to Vick, I'm not saying he is as good as Vick was coming out, but I see his skill set comparable. He's definitely an upgrade to the quarterbacks they have now. Do I think he can eventually become a franchise quarterback? Absolutely. Is he going to come out and instantly become a star like Newton or Griffin? I doubt it, but overall I think it was worth a gamble for an early second round pick.

Look he did all his stuff against big 12 defenses. When he faced good Ds not so great (K State). He'll get a shot but I hope the Jets did this to generate the buzz a QB pick does rather than expecting him to save the franchise. Cause I think the chances of him being an above average NFL QB are pretty slim.

This kid is a historic loser. Just like Josh Freeman was. Tough road game, instant loss. A turnover machine that was the product of a talented offense. This one is so obvious.

I guess that's why I'm not an nfl scout, because from what I have seen of him has been good.
The only thing I can say bad is that he had the tendency to give up when his defense sucked behind. I'm not a West Virginia fan and definitely not a Jets fan, but he was exciting to watch.

I think you are over-reacting to a heavily slanted article. By reading that same article you could just as easily take away that he fired his agents on an collection of other factors, and for him to fire his agents that he was close with it's hard for me not to believe him. You can talk about his lack of skill development and pocket presence for sure, but in my opinion Geno Smith has shown better character than 80% of the guys being drafted. I think this article was an over-reaction which will easily have an affect after the mistake that Geno made by showing up to the draft and looking miserable, but I think that was the first time he has shown anything other than good character. Surprised you didn't jump all over this one scalabrine, since it was an over-reaction you could turn it into a race issue easily.
