I dont think that extracurricular activities should be tied to drug testing...
so first question = no
my personal belief is that extracurricular activities keep kids out of trouble (idle hands...) So you take that away from kids it would result in the possibility of more drug problems... so to take it away from a kid who has tested positive and shown that they might be vulnerable to a drug problem is basically identifying the kid that needs the help and taking away something that can help like extracurricular activities... one could say it will singles out the kids that are vulnerable to a problem and helps promote it...
I think on right to privacy, my perception is more a like a right to parent and putting the individual responsibility of the parent in their hands... Or being for Big Intrusive Government dictating families how they should parent...
If parents want to drug test their kids and have consequence attached to it that the parents choose like prom or extracurricular activities, I am all for the right to do that... the right for the parent to be able to parent their own child how they see fit and not dictated by Big Intrusive Government taking that right away from them...
But I guess thats just me... not everyone is for the rights of families and parents to take personal responsibility and freedom in raising their children by their own standards that not that imposed/dictated to them by Big Intrusive Government...

I see it as the stuff is illegal, so you have no right to privacy in it. For the most part, the only people that fear drug tests are those who use them.

Sure, but make sure you drug test all of the coaches, officials, administrators, staff, etc. as well.

I know heavy drug users that are very successful and you wouldn't believe me if I told you they used. I know some people that are as clean as can be and can't form a rational thought in their head.
Schools should stick to educating, not drug testing. But hell they can't do that very well either. Lets start with drug testing from the top down.

I don't know about testing them in school like they did in the story, but when they go in for the physical they have to take I don't see a problem with it. Or if they suspect drug use. They want to be treated as an adult at that age they can act like one.

they'll do things that don't show up on the drug test... most of the time those things are even more dangerous... if they are the type of kid that would do drugs but isn't because the school has drug tests, what do you think that person will do after they leave that school and there aren't any more drug tests?
it will be a big budget item and take away money from areas that are already under funded. so, in my opinion... it will actually hurt the kids.

you mean you aren't in favor of forever increasing the size of government and spending more and more money on things that will have little if any benefit yet take money away from already struggling areas that kids need?

i was in a seminar the other day. the guy was talking about addiction and how it has 0% to do with will power. he's the same guy that fires you if you fail 3 drug tests. how does that make sense?
