You don't smuggle drugs over in the East....If you're gonna do it yuo should do it in the US cause you would not even get life here....tells you how loosy goosey our penal system really is......If our punishments were more severe then people would really have to think twice before committing any crime...They don't fuck around accross the pond...

It's common knowledge in the Southern Hemisphere that you are well and truly fucked if you get busted trying to smuggle drugs into S.E.Asia. Not that I have preferred countries that I would attempt to smuggle drugs into, but S.E.Asia would NOT be an area that I would even consider trying my luck in. The penalties are harsh, and they refuse to even consider extradition or possible prisoner exchange. Not to mention that the local prisoners are not overly welcoming to foreign prisoners.

I couldn't think of too many things worse than having to do extended hard time in a foreign prison.

Thanks, and I hear you loud and clear. I'm not looking for sympathy at all as I am a firm believer that if you do the crime then you do the time. Smuggling drugs is crazy at the best of times, let alone allegedly attempting to smuggle them into a country known for extreme penalties for drug trafficking.

The defense is also flimsy and a little embarrassing. I have travelled a lot over the past 8 years and I would NEVER not thoroughly check any luggage that someone gave me to use for travelling purposes.

What can you say? I feel for him as he was a good friend when I was younger, but if he did this, he was knowingly taking a huge gamble and lost, and deserves to be punished. I feel more for his family as they will be suffering daily throughout the length of his sentence, and it will be a long, long sentence.

In most Asian airports they have a lot of big signs saying drug smuggling will result in the death penalty.
First time I saw that I was worried about my aspirins in my bag.

Just don't mess around with drugs in Asia. You can get away with murder but drugs? No way.
I wouldn't even consider smoking pot over there.
