unless your amount is less than what it cost per a person for food or the venue... It kinda like pulling your own weight... like our wedding was like $40 a plate, so i got alot of $100 checks that covered the people that attended... the one that pissed me off was the woman that asked for extra guests and brought her boyfriend and 4 kids and gave us $25...
You give a 'close friend' $200 or even $250, I can assure you, you two won't be too close anymore...

So the dollar itself has declined in buying power which makes you give more in the wedding envelope (yes, up to $500) but your wage is stagnant and therefore it will hurt to give given your monthly budget (and that goes for virtually anyone on this site with a traditional job/wage).
It's not a lot and it is a lot, depending on the giver and the taker.

Not to mention, more than like the groom or brides parents are helping them with it substantially...huge/glamorous weddings are a joke---especially those are like 25k plus. You guys are all wrong. Your dollar amount has to be semi based on your current financial situation. If you are unemployed and are broke degenerate no one is expecting you to give them 500 bucks. Pay 100-200 and you are fine. If you are some wall street hedgefund guy it;s a different story and you hook the couple up with a nice check to help them kick start their future. Give what you can. It's the though that counts?

if you go to a nice wedding you should give at least 150 per person so 300 is right, that is a perfect amount... including taxes, usually plates at a nice place ESP. in new york is about 150 per person... if you give 100 dollars as a couple do the wedding couple a favor and dont show up... they would rather save the 200 dollars then to have u cheapos there

I think friends and family will know if you're being cheap. They know if you're an attorney or scrub floors for a living.
When I got married it worked out as I expected my wealthy friends and family gave nice things or around $500. My poor friends and family gave as low as $25. No stress for me either way. It's about the get together in my opinion if people are getting married just for $ then that's a whole different issue.

Interesting topic........I have to fly back to Virginia for a nephews wedding soon & hadn't thought about it a whole lot. Not sure $500 is reasonable.......they aren't paying for it, her folks are.

Give what you can afford and think is appropriate. Standards in gift giving is as stupid as standards in engagement rings (3 months salary..really?!)
If you are concerned about what they think of your gift, they aren't good people IMHO. I didn't expect anything for my wedding except that people show up and help us celebrate, and that they have a good time. The best gifts we received were our guests telling us how much fun they had.

I've never given any friends anything more than $100 at their wedding and we're all still friends. I didn't get anymore than $100 from any of my friends at my own wedding. in fact $100 was about the average that we got from everyone.

If your friends are fine with $100, ok.
