Just reading thru the most miserable city thread and I think it would be good to have the antithesis of that here in the forum.Basically what is the best city to live? You don't have to live there or ever lived there for that matter but just a place you visited,or know a little bit about and really liked.
Criteria to consider would be
Job Prospects- Comparatively low unemployment and many corporate headquarters. Noone should be unemployed very long in MN.
Living Costs - Housing, taxes etc- Always on the lower end for gas prices and can still buy a very nice house in the burbs for $150,000-$200,000. Gallon of milk for $2.00, and a case of Bud or Miller about $16, sales tax just went up to 6.875%. no tax on food and clothing, 9% on liquor, and a pack of smokes is around $5 (i think).
Family Life - Schools, daycare costs,etc- Consistently one of the best graduation rates, also has amusement parks, zoos, museums, and fine arts.
Crime and safety issues- Only 18 murders in Minneapolis in 2009. (to be fair Minneapolis is on pace to shatter that number in 2010) Pretty safe especially the suburbs.
Amenities - Sports teams, outdoor activities- Vikings, Twins, and Wild, are always fun and we do have an NBA team (sort of). Land of 10,000 lakes so you are never too far from great fishing. Also great parks and nature areas.
Nightlife - bars, clubs, women, strip clubs- Minneapolis has a great club scene. Something there for everyone. Also the college towns also have great bar scenes for the twenty-somethings. A friend of mine was visiting from New York and we are at Grand Ole Days and he was shocked at all the beautiful blondes.
Based on your criteria Minneapolis would be up there.
The Bad: -Of course the winters suck so bad when you get below zero temps for weeks on end.
- There has been an influx of welfare mooches from Chicago, Gary, and Milwaukee, which has made a couple pockets much more dangerous to live in than past years.(Brooklyn Center and No. Minneapolis) Apparently MN has a very generous welfare system, compared to these areas.
-The metrodome is a god-awful place to have had to watch the Vikings and thank god the Twins finally have a beautiful new stadium.
But based on your original criteria Minneapolis would be up there. Homer pick here.
My own vote would be Toronto ![]()
What's yours ?
