I feel you on So Cali. I am born and bred in the Los Angeles area and for the first time in my life I am considering moving out.
It's just not the same as it used to be or maybe I am being nostalgic. Traffic is insane any time of day, people are assholes and douche bags outside of the area where I live. Taxes are getting out of control thanks to the population who like to vote for tax increases on themselves.
Cost of living is insane, I am spending $200-$250 a week on groceries for 3 people, cost of gas is higher than most of the country, job market sucks.
I have some friends that moved to San Jose, they seem to like it. He is working for Apple after retiring from the Army.

awesome stories guys. i always felt that texas was a great place with great people, the only problem was the weather for me back then but now i've changed my mind about that. If the economy is so great in an underrated city like texas i would expect the traffic to be HORRIBLE and i understand it. It goes hand in hand and makes a lot of sense.
The weather is harsh in the summer for about 3 months, it's not humid so it really doesn't bother me. Working outside after 10am is almost impossible. The rest of the year is not bad at all, we get like 2 weeks of 20 to 30 degrees. The rest of the winter is 40 to 70 and sometimes changes drastically throughout the day.
They have a saying here, "If you don't like the weather in Texas then wait 15 minutes"
I live in North Austin and it's getting busier and over populated here too. The traffic is a pain in the behind if you have to go North or South between 8am and 10am or 4pm to 6:30pm. I avoid it as much as I can.

hopefully i do not come across as someone who hates the scenery in southern california (san diego is null and void of this statement) but yeah i definitely can relate to you. What do you feel has made you stay? For many people it's their family and friends that they have known since they were born and raised. For others, that 1 single girlfriend/wife can be all the family or friends than they ever need. And then of course you have a lot of people who are raising their kids here. Yes the job market here isn't that great and let me tell you i am a little surprised to see not a single negative entry regarding work in austin. Even on city data websites, not a single one but i realize many people might be flocking so you gotta make your move if you want in.

But Austin is only really cool to Texans that don't know any better........if a San Fran type of guy....you might enjoy it at first but soon should be laughing at how hard the city tries to be hip.......basically a college town overgrown and overpriced ....traffic is bad and crime numbers are rising (theft mostly).....winter weather is great but it's gonna be 95 degrees or so June thru September.......definitely more hip/liberal than any other place in Texas ......but it's still the SOUTH...most schools were still segregated in 1970 or so....> still several places in Texas in which black folks are very uneasy to be out after dark..........a very comfortable place to live ...but far from an enlightened culture........best of luck........
*from a native Texan.....lived all over the state....including 3-4 years in Austin
It is better to be feared - than to be loved.

No place like it in my mind I used to work for a company based there, great people great food great music great sports women are killer but the traffic does suck and it's f....ing HOT in the summer but other than that it's hard not to like.promoting cold ones in the summer is an Austin tradition.
