Just a question about contests in general. I have noticed before that when STARTING off a contest, like Covers just did with the NCAFF bowl games, that my rank goes down, when not one game has been played.
For instance... I made a pick... was ranked 34th because I was the 34th person to make a pick. How do I go from 34th to 104th in a few hours? How does this happen? I'm just asking because I know the "first to make a pick" is often the tie breaker here on Covers.

The top of the leader board never seems to move... you know how in just about every contest you see, Patriotsfinished at or near the top of the leader board at the start of a new week, obviously he waits and makes his picks at a certain time so he can get that top spot. Not sure what time the new week starts, (10PM eastern?)... but that guy has it down to a science.
Like I said... I was at one point, the 34th person to make my picks in the new bowl games contest... now I'm 372.
Thanks again

Thanks Rizz.

This is simply due to more participants joining the contest.
That tie-breaker, however, refers to the first between two users to make the deciding "winning pick" at the end of the contest.
Hope this clarifies things a little.
I still don't get it. If that is the case, the reason I'm being moved down the list... why does the top few never move?
Like for instance... the new NCAAF bowl contest... the top few have not changed, same exact order in which they made picks. First person to make a pick is first... second is still second... third is still third.
Why then was the 34th person... (me)... now 479th? If what you are trying to say is ...as more people join the contest... others who made picks BEFORE they did... we get moved down on the list? If so... why are they not put at the top of the list... where is the "line" drawn as to where the "New" contest entries go on the list.
What you are saying makes no sense to me... if numbers 1-10 never move because of the "New contest entries"....then how the hell does number 34?
Can you see what I'm saying?
First to make a pick.. number one spot... second to make pic, second spot, third to make pick, third spot and so on... why is there a change to some spots... but not the top spots?

What he's saying is that, with everyone at 0-0, as more join, rankings will change. HOWEVER, if (for argument's sake) 100 people start out at 1-0, the person who made the pick first will be ranked 1st, etc.
In other words, before the contest starts, ranking means absolutely nothing and it's all arbitrary.

I understand all that... but what I'm asking... is, why number one-ten or so... don't change when new people join... but yet people in the 34th spot, like me... get moved back?
If they were the first, second and third to make picks... and stay first second and third... why does the person who made picks 34th, 35th and 36ty... get moved back when new people make picks?
That's what I do not understand... why am I being moved... when others are not? It makes no difference in the outcome of the contest as far as I can see... but I still don't understand why the first 10 or so on the "Leader board"... keep those spots when new members make picks... but myself and others get moved... when others join in the fun.
Can you see what I'm saying? Do you understand what has be perplexed?
If some are being moved down in rankings as new members join... should they not be put at the top of the list?
I guess it seems odd when some stay in the same position as new members join... but yet, others get moved. I just wanted to know why that is.

I understand what you're questioning but since it's neither here nor there, I don't think it should be a big deal (IMO, of course).
I'll just take that as a "I really don't know why".
But there has to be a "Method to the madness"...
The computer program has to place new members, at some rank when they make a pick... and it's obviously not in order of when they make the pick... so I guess it has to be another way the computer says.... "Ok... I'm going to put you ranked 3rd, even though you are the 478th person to make a pick in this contest"
I guess I'm just wondering why... it just does not rank people in order that they make picks / enter the contest. The same thing happens at the start of a new week when everyone has all zeros. I guess it seems odd to me that it ranks and moves people like it does... and if it's "Arbitrary"... the simple way would be, in order you make your picks, that's the way it stays.
Also... you say it's "Arbitrary"... put it's really not and for many reasons. For those of us who take the great contests here on covers seriously... and those of us who know who are the very good cappers from the bad... we like to see when the top players make picks and what lines they took and when and so on.
Thanks for taking the time out to try and help answer my question... but I'm sure the computer program does not say.... "It's all arbitrary... so let me put Joe Schmo in the 22nd spot... and Jane Schmo in 493rd spot, because I can and it's arbitrary anyway".
