10. Georgia Tech
- Georgia Tech | Offense Preview | Defense | Depth Chart
Why Georgia Tech should be No. 1: Had Calvin Johnson foolishly decided to come back for his senior year, Georgia Tech probably would've been our sleeper choice to play USC for the national title. There might not be a better set of lines in the country, and everything will revolve around them. RB Tashard Choice is an elite runner who'll have plenty of room to run, while QB Taylor Bennett will be an upgrade over Reggie Ball. Just about everyone returns to a stellar defense, led by LB Philip Wheeler, and a top-notch safety tandem of Jamal Lewis and Djay Jones.
Why Georgia Tech isn't No. 1: James Johnson might be a nice receiver, but he's not Calvin Johnson. Losing CJ will hurt the most, but losing offensive coordinator Patrick Nix to Miami will also sting. The depth is thin at linebacker and the corners aren't necessarily special. Tech's biggest problem has always been game-in-and-game-out consistency, and this year won't be any different. You know the total clunker is coming, you just don't know when (possibly at Maryland).
Relative Strengths: Offensive Line, Defensive Line
Relative Weaknesses: Wide Receiver, Secondary

Georgia Tech QB Taylor Bennett should more consistent than Reggie Ball.
While Georgia Tech doesn't have a receiver with Johnson's athleticism or explosiveness, there are quite a few options. Junior James Johnson caught 39 passes for 608 yards and two touchdowns last season. Sophomore Greg Smith had seven catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns in a limited role in 2006.
But the player to watch is redshirt freshman Demaryius Thomas, who is capable of replacing a large portion of Johnson's production. Thomas has great size (6-foot-3, 220) and speed and has shown dependable hands and route running. He was so good in the spring that Yellow Jackets coach Chan Gailey tried to temper expectations by talking about his team's other receivers.
With tailback Tashard Choice and underrated fullback Mike Cox returning, the Yellow Jackets might be even more explosive this season.

"He was the best linebacker we saw last season."

Wheeler isn't a big talker or an oversized personality, but he is an explosive athlete who has really matured since coming to Tech. Three years ago, he was undisciplined and frequently was caught out of position. Last season, Wheeler became more of a thinking man's linebacker and fit well into this scheme. His timing is often impeccable; Tech loves to get Wheeler matched up on backs after he flies in on a delayed blitz behind stunting Yellow Jackets D-linemen. Last season he notched nine sacks, and the havoc he caused probably led to twice that many.
"He's a freak of an athlete," said a line coach whose team played against Tech last season. "You don't want to have him matched up with your tailback, but [Tenuta] does such a good job with his pressure packages, that's usually what you're stuck with. And then Wheeler just tosses your guy. He's really good with his hands.

Those counting on Georgia Tech to plummet simply because Calvin Johnson is in Detroit are about to be very surprised. Erratic quarterback Reggie Ball is also gone, which is good news, both lines are terrific, and running back Tashard Choice is about to make a surprise run at All-America honors. The Jackets get Virginia Tech at Bobby Dodd, meaning don’t count out a run for a second straight Coastal Division crown.
