The only problem I have with 4 teams is that then only teams from the big 4 conferences will be in them. \
Lets put the SEC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, and Big East in a football division all alone and they can only play teams that are in those conferences. Let all the other conferences (not including the 1-AA or 1-AAA divisions) play in a league of their own and they will not be allowed to play with the SEC, ACC...etc.
Play a 16 team playoff with every conference winner and the 4 highest in the rankings that were not winners.

Perfect idea of 16. The 12 conference winners and the top 4 in the polls that were not winners.
In the history of the BCS there has never been a clear 2 teams that have been in the final game and there will not be a clear 4 teams either. Take the guess work out of it and take the conference winners and the top 4 teams in the polls.

In 2005
Texas was 13-0 and won their conference.
USC was 12-1 and won their conference.
But, TCU was 12-1 and won their conference, Penn State was 11-1 and won their conference, West Virginia was 11-1 and won their conference.
So USC, TCU, Penn State, and West Virginia were all tied at 2nd best records. Since none of them played head to head they were still tied.
In 2010
Auburn was 14-0 and won their conference
Oregon was 12-1 and won their conference
Ohio State was 12-1 and won their conference, TCU was 13-0 and won their conference, Nevada was 13-1 and won their conference. Auburn and TCU were undefeated and should have played each other....if it was a fair test.
But with a playoff they play it off.

In the world of the BCS (BULL CRAP SYSTEM) You can say anyone would beat anyone. But until they meet head to head you cannot say who would beat who. The best records should play as they do in EVERY other sport in existance.

If you are going to allow them to be in the I-A division you have to include them, otherwise drop them to 1-AA and only have a 6 conference 1-A.
Otherwise you are basically telling every coach other then about 30 that regardless of how good their teams are and can go 12-0 and beat everyone 50-0 and they have no shot at winning.
Either let them be on the same playing field or dont include them at all. And there are many teams that would love to join bigger conferences but the NCAA will not allow them. Their is a cap on the stadium size (a stadium must seat so many) to be included in many conferences and many have college size requirements.
It is not the fault of the smaller schools it is the fault of the NCAA.

In 2010 you also had TCU undefeated. Playoff needed.
In 2009 you had Boise St undefeated. Playoff needed.
In 2005, you are correct. I was wrong on that one.
In 2004 you had 5 undefeated teams. Playoff needed.
In 2002 you had Ohio State that had a perfect record but tied for their conference title with Iowa and had they played on a neutral field Iowa would have been a 4 pt favorite. And yes I got that from a bookmaker that actually makes lines for a living.
I agree with just about everyone on here that a playoff is needed. I am just showing that 4 teams is not enough and it needs to be all conference winners and the next 3 or 4 top ranked teams that were not winners.

If a non-AQ team goes 12-0 and plays a tough non-Conf schedule and wins every game by 50 points, they would be in the BCS game 9 years out of 10, under the current system.

Actually it wouldnt and it was proven in 2009. After 15 weeks Texas and Alabama were undefeated. But Cincinnati, TCU and Boise State were also undefeated. If you look at the projections if Texas and Alabama would have lost and Cincinnati, TCU and Boise State would have won, the final game would have been Florida vs Alabama. Check the BCS standings for week 15 then do the math on the calculations and see how it would have worked out. There would have been 3 undefeated teams and none of them would have been in the final game.
It is not the fault of the teams in the lesser conferences it is the fault of the NCAA and the teams in the bigger conferences that wont allow them in and wont play them on home and home or even home and 2 home deals.

It is not the fault of those teams for the leagues they are in. They win the games they are given to play. Just because the big conferences do not want them in their conference does not mean they should be discriminated against.
I know for a fact the Boise State sent invitations to every team in the SEC, Big 10, ACC, and Big 12 and only got 3 replies to play them and none. Not one team from the SEC or Big 12 replied.
If you are not going to let them play in the finals then drop them completely from 1-A and keep any team from the big 5 conferences from being allowed to schedule the weak teams from those conferences since those are the only ones the big teams are willing to play.

Boom-
Agree on all points- bottom line for me is I can't think of any year where you could argue for more than 4 teams- 4 is enough and in the end we will have what seems to be a legit champion- finally!!!
