Anyone else find themself saying this far too much watching this tourney? These refs are the worst. These kids are extending their arms straight up and not leaving their feet, like they are taught, and the refs are calling fouls on them. Terrible.

yeah.  it's shitty out there.  i just saw the WVU guy go up and the UK guy made no advancement towards the shooter, but the shooter jumped into him and got a "foul"

the two words that come to mind for me are "sad" and "pathetic"

I don't understand how its so bad. You'd think they'd assign the best refs for this tourney and not just any whistle-happy-shithead.

Agreed...have seen a lot of that already in this tourney.  Offensive player jumping in to a defender holding his own ground, which he is allowed to do, and the ref blowing the whistle to bail out the shooter.

I read coach Cal's lips and he said something similar. Its so unfortunate. Let these kids play. Their not just fucking with this game, but their lives.

those last 2 foul calls were a complete joke,let them freakin play. no where close to the basket and refs just hand West Va 3 points completely ridiculous

Kentucky is getting completely jobbed in this game.  These refs are awful.

Been saying this since thursday...the refs have been awful in this tournament...very suspect calls.

When is the last time you've seen a team shoot 60% and be down 8 points at halftime. All those 8 points were given on a silver platter via these suspect refs.

Hate to say it but agree.

I am so tired of the running up the court parallel to someone foul and they jump into you as a defender as they are shooting and you are blown for a foul.

That may be in the rule book but it is disgusting on all levels of basketball.

Also, they are totally swallowing their whistles in the last 30 seconds of close games to as not to determint the outcome but by such they are determining the outcome.

At least it is not rigged like the NBA with star treatment.

All that said, I reffed a little B-Ball in college and it is very tough. Hope they can get a little better and more consistent.

They may have very well cost Kentucky the game.  Down 8 to West Virginia is not 8 to any team.  It's like 14.  WVa plays very solid defense and knows how to protect a lead. 

Unless Kentucky comes out on fire and gets this back to 2 or so quickly, this one may be over.

I'm totally with you man.  If you read the "wow Kentucky really" thread you will see I already made a rant to this.

Simply put the referees have ZERO consistency these days and absolutely NO ONE to answer to.  They can blow the whistle when somebody farts and call it a foul, then there will be a total hack that they completely ignore.  And yes, it ruins games.  Donaghy went down and now they act like everything's ok, but it's not.

It ruins games, and it ruins my day every day.  I dug a one foot hole in the hard desert earth with a pick yesterday because of the AZ/Memphis game.  That's how angry I get.

But will it change?  Probably not.

as far as traveling calls go, the NCAA has turned into the NBA

I never seen so many off the ball fouls called on kentucky so early. im not even talking about the obvious last two, but all the early ones they called on Lamb and Harrellson

Are NCAA Basketball Games Fixed?

If you ask Justin Wolfers, a professor of business and public policy at Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the answer is that it's highly likely.

Wolfers' Research

Wolfers published a paper entitled Point Shaving: Corruption in NCAA Basketball in American Economic Review in May of 2006, suggesting point spread shaving may have influenced the outcome of nearly 500 games over a 16-year sample period. Wolfers looked at point spread favorites of 12 or more points and concluded those teams tend to cover the point spread at a lower rate than they should. While that one statistic isn't enough to conclude there is something unusual going on, Wolfers also mentions the NCAA survey where eight out of 388 basketball players admitted to taking money in exchange for playing poorly or at least had knowledge of teammates who did.

College basketball has had its share of betting scandals in the past, with Boston College, Arizona State, Tulane, and Northwestern, but if Wolfers is correct, there are plenty of more NCAA betting scandals that are going undetected each year.

Mazzula is undersized but this guy is an incredible actor. I can't even blame the incompetent ref on that one.
