Kap,

My passion/problem began nearly a decade ago in college at FSU. I lived in a fraternity house and some of the older guys introduced me to "gambling" on football. I was well acclimated with gambling itself, spening way too many nights at a nearby dog track my senior year of high school and summers home from school (not much else to do when you arent 21 yet) and had my highs and lows, but enjoyed the experience. In college it became an "easy" way to make money for your bar tabs for the week and it seemed like I never lost. Unfortunately this established a bad habit of the evil evil "parlay". It was so easy to say Green Bay and the Over and win $260 in a couple hours. Despite a couple bad Monday nights (most notably letting $2200 ride on the afformention Packers on monday night in 1999 when I was dead broke) but all in all made $$$$, which has ten times the value in college than it does when youre employed. It all game to a screeching halt in 2002 (no fault of my own) when our bookie was implicated in the Adrian MacPherson fiasco and the FSU PD came to our fraternity house with questionarres about gambling on college football...alas, I forgot about the rush of sports betting as I was over 21 and Biloxi was only a short drive away. After garduation I got a job and began the grind. Realizing how long I worked to make $260 that used to come so easily, I got back into the game, plus it just wasnt as fun on gamedays not being immersed in the FSU football experience in tallahassee. Nothing big to report on those years, would put a few hundred in my account and play it all year, winning some and losing some, but since it was online, I was playing with "real money" as opposed to credit with a local...well this fall I got a local and fake money again, as well as more disposable income than I was accustomed to. The first part of the fall was amazing, hitting most of my big plays and banking on the 2H of the NFL. Unfortunately, these 2H parlays seemed so easy that I started playing them regularly again and winning! In fact, the week before Thanksgiving and the week of, I was hitting 4 and 5 gamers at $50-$100 a pop like it was my job, netting a few thousand in the process. Well, as you can guess, it was downhill from there. I started pressing my luck and playing more and more parlays (many with the same games in them) and hitting 4 of 5, or 5 of 6, or 3 of 4, so I was not deterred, thinking I'm one game off from hitting the big one again. I never hit the big one again, and playing 5 or 6 $100 parlays a night took its toll on my roll, not only giving back the few thousand I was up, but forking out a couple more of my own...I took December and bowl season off because I figured presents for my loved ones were more important than frivilous gambling (not to mention my agent & good friend wouldnt let me play anymore cause he didnt want to see me lose). But when the Cards made the playoff run (I was born in AZ) I was allowed to play the NFC champ game and won enough to make some super bowl plays. I ended up about 7U after the super bowl and let it marinade for a couple weeks. Last week however, I got laid up with a bum neck and decided to see what I could do with a goal of 20U by the end of the week to play out the season. Wouldnt you know I did it, so I started out the week with a decent roll and the plan of money management...I had been playing small (since I wasnt working with a lot) but changed my tune by Mon, losing 6U on the clips, another 6 or so on the Cavs, and the other 8 chasing or playing 1Q's to make $$ for the late games. So now I'm back to square one and my friend wont let me play anymore because I simply make too many plays and have been on a bad run (NBA, suprisingly was killing NCAAB). I;m not out of the game by any stretch but consider it another chapter in the learing experience. I do think I finally learned my lesson and will play much more conservative next week when my account clears!!
I know that was long as shit, but it was actually refreshing to get it out. Best Thread EVER kap!! BOL to all!!!

Handicapping is a marathon not a sprint. Its like.......investing...... always think long term and you'll instinctively manage your bankroll according to what it is.
Winning doesn't hurt either.

Kapono, feel the pain that eats up your insides. The one thing I have learned over the years is the ability to say no is more profitable than saying yes. Dont know how many times you feel on top of the world and then bang, a heavy weekend of sniffling too many lines and your profits have turned red.
On the contrary, dont know how many times I told myself take a break and then i go on the hottest streak ever and all is forgotten. Its usually when you at least expect the run to come the cash piles up. Go Cuse, Smoke em if you got em

One question Kapo my bud. Do you ever think you could watch a game without action on it. Hell no. We all do it and we all got the stories. Mine Raiders/Buff in the playoffs. Missed extra point cost me. Norte Dame, lose huge game by 1/2 point. FG kicker misses five for the game, all chip shots. Spurrier (basterd) up by 40 throws a bomb with 10 seconds left in the game. TD, that was probably the worst beat.
If you want come to my world
Thats where I post.
Your a great capper but sometimes that means nothing.

fo sho man its tough to stay disciplined...past 2 weeks i cashed out 170 and 60 respectively, im a small bettor as im a college student with lack of money, but i have begun to take bettin more serious than i used to. I am up 155 this week and my last day is sunday, i would just love to not bet and gurantee a nice little paycheck and start a new slate on monday, but noon comes around and ur blood starts to crave....i will pray tonite that i dont bet again this week, but man its tough when there are 100 games poppin all day....we all need to realize there will always be another game, its never a bad thing to lay off even if the bet was a winner it shows discipline and an understanding of the bettin world...

I think this is something that everyone has to go through in their maturation process. It just takes some people (me included) more than once to learn.

My money management either makes me or breaks me. I get no thrill winning a unit at a time (which I know will make me a winner in the long run). I typically turn $200-$400 into 1500-2000 and than play crazy. But more often than not, once I bet crazy I lose and the cycle begins all over again. I don't think I will change this anytime soon because when I hit it is big. Almost hit big yesterday if it wasn't for Gonzaga, but luckily my whole bankroll wasn't gone so I can go for it big Sat.

Kapman your 26-30
Im pushin 50. Investing in sports wagering since early 80's.Took me a few years to learn my lesson back in the day.Definetly learned the hard way..the only way.
Money management, discipline and patience... and of course you need to know how to cap/pick winners better than 56%.However, if there is no money management, you can pick winners at a 75%clip and go broke. I get most of my bankroll from the NCAAF/NFL and then take a % of it and use it for CBB.Once that portion is gone. Im done until the next Football season. It is a maturation process without a doubt.

Love NBAFan's advice above, but DAMN I wish I would change that avatar. The whole Heath Ledger/ Joker thing is just too creepy.
And yes, after betting for about 10 years, I still chase my losses. Got hammered this week as I lost just about every bet.
If you want to play, you have to plan for weeks like that and either cut back or quit when you start losing.
Use a piece of graph paper. You get a visual feedback on whether you are on a winning or losing streak. One bar up for a win; one bar down for a loss. Try it! Your track record will jump off the page and you will get a look at your record in an instant.
Of course, you have to have the discipline to cut back when the slope of your chart is down. Ooops.

I was with you on UCLA and 2nd half UCLA, we got robbed in that game. I thought we were on the right side.
My dumb ass took Louisville as well.
I like your writeups for Saturday. Stick to a system and don't try and chase, cause come Monday, at least Monday for me, I hate paying up.
Paying up is a BITCH, none of us like it, but it builds character. There are more of us (degenerates), than there are BOOKS, just keep your head up and caloborate with the rest of the cats on this site and we will slowly but surely creep back up and maintain a positive bankrool$$$$$ Discipline is must and is easier said than done. 1 game a day @ $50 bucks or $100 bucks is still profit. 1 step @ a time will make everything pan out. BOL to you and everyone else here. Lets get this $$$$$$$$ and live a little more care free($$$$).

Yesterday is history. Make a note of what happened and move on. I actually have a notepad file on my computer with "Betting words of wisdom" which I look at before every bet I make lol so I don't make the same mistakes again.
I think the most important thing to do is not let yesterday impact on your capping of games today and beyond.

I've been doing "sports investing" since the summer of 2000. I can tell you this...it's more about patience than money management. I've been having a miserable NBA/CBB year because I seem to have forgotten that I don't have to bet the 12pm slate of games...I see a line there and I can't resist. Last Sunday, I went a whopping 0-8 and none of them were even close
I don't care if you're 18 or 68, patience is the hardest thing to do in our line of business.
