Maybe because the warriors doctors.....but yeah good question
I feel so bad for the guy. Thankfully that's wearing off as we all care about our next wager.

Exactly

....because he's not Nicolas Batum or Dante Exum or some other trash. He can probably get a max even though he has to sit. Warriors need to figure out how to handle Klay now.

First week of the season, Curry "comes up gimpy" and has to undergo ankle surgery - deemed out for the entire year, Steve Kerr steps down as coach - Mark Jackson comes back and finishes what he started with the splash brothers & KD, plus who ever else they end up coning there with ring aspirations in 2020-2021.
Gotta dump Iggy, Livingston, Green, McKinnie, Cook, Jerebko, Bogut and start off fresh when all their horses come back fully recharged for "one last run".

Reading an article that says Durant will be less of a player-less minutes, good in doses, but never the same. Less games.
I still hold out hope-because of modern medicine. But if true, what a tragic situation to an elite, super elite player.

He can Get a billion dollar shoe deal or pretty close to it and he can go the east. Kd leaving warriors is pretty much a safe bet to make wish there was a line on that.

YOU ASKED WHY... HERE IS WHY:
1. Torn achilles may be the toughest injury to overcome. Even when it has "healed", it tends to remain weaker than it was. They are way worse than ACL tears. Basketball where you are jumping, accelerating and breaking for 40 minutes almost non-stop, is probably the sport where your achilles´ workload is more significant out of all sports.
2. Kobe had it...he came back...but never at the same level. Yeah, it may have been age, just as with Billups, but both guys regressed a lot after that injury. Boogie, has not been the stud he was.
3. Durant aint as old as those 2 were, but he is not 20. 30 is 30, it may be your prime due to the balance of experience and athletick abilities, but your body aint at its best in terms of healing from injuries.
___So as a first premise, noone, not even KD, can guarantee he will be back just as he is now. The reason is, we don´t know for certain if that right achilles will be the same. If there was a bet, I would definitely bet it won´t be.
Why does this matter? Because if he exercises his option and he seeks the max contract next year, he will be asked to go through shootarounds, drills, exercises, tests, God knows what... He will have physicians inspect every nanometer and xray that there has ever been made and especially that WILL be made of that achilles once it has "healed". You also need to add what 1 year of rustiness can do to you.
So, why sign now and not wait a full year? It´s simple... eliminate the risk of a very likely non fully healed achilles that could lead to a lower contract or less options. Today, noone doubts he deserves that contract (because most GMs are idiots and not doctors), but in one year if doctors have some evidence to support their claims, maybe they will be more skeptic (one or two idiots will still max him out regardless of his injury progress).
Why exercise the option and sign next year? I have no idea. Only if you are stubborn enough to think that you will have the same options and value in one year than you do now. If I was KD, I would opt out 100% and sign a max one with the Knicks.
