BYU enters this contest with an 8-4 overall record and a poor 5-7 ATS record. As is their style they are on the north side of the O/U going 8-4 this season. The Cougars started the season off well destroying (#25 Coaches Poll) Texas 41-7 and scoring 150 offensive point in their first four games while giving up an avg 18.75 ppg helping them brake into the AP top 20 by week 5. They were considered a team to recon with and many saw them breaching the top 10 sometime in the season. Week 6 had other plans however as BYU began the first of a four game losing streak, a losing streak that was not expected by the expert analysts nor anyone else for that matter.
Memphis boasts a 9-3 record and a nice 7-4-1 ATS mark. The Tigers also enjoy scoring as they are 7-5 against the O/U number. Memphis' schedule started off tough as they traveled to the Rose Bowl in week 2 to face #11 UCLA as 22 point underdogs. The Tigers rallied back to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but a 33 yard TD pass proved too much 35-42. Week 5 have Memphis travel to #10 Ole Miss as 21 point dogs. Trailing 7-3 at the end of the Third Quarter Ole Miss finally overpowered the Tiger scoring 17 in the final quarter 3-24.
There are a few things that make me take notice when I capped this game, offesive and defensive strengths, common opponents and yes, bowl frequency and records to name a few.
Since 1974 BYU has played in 32 bowl games and an overall record of 13-18-1 and 1 National Championship. Their last bowl appearance was last year losing to Washington 31-16. This year will make the 10th consecutive bowl appearance with a record 6-3 for the last 9. The Cougars avg 463 ypg offensively while allowing 383 ypg on the defensive side. They avg 36 ppg while giving up 25 ppg.
Memphis played in their first bowl game in 1971 defeating San Jose St 28-9. They have appeared in five more bowl contests achieving a 3-3 overall record with their last appearance in 2008. The Tigers offense have avg 423 ypg while yielding 343 defensively. Offensively they have posted 35 ppg and Rank 7th Nationally on Defense avg 18.6 ppg.
Both teams rely on their run game avg 191 and 192 ypg respectively and both defenses have play well against the run. BYU gives up 118 ypg while Memphis 125. BYU has the advantage in the passing game with a 272 to 231 avg.
They have faced Two Common Opponents, Middle Tennessee and Houston. BYU defeated both, @MTU 27-7 and at home vs Houston 33-25. Memphis went 1-1 losing to Houston at home 24-28 and beating MTU at home 36-17.
The line looks correct to me; however I even see it going up a tad before Saturday. As a note of interest, BYU has 69 Softmore, Junior and Senior players on the roster and a coaching staff with recent bowl experience.

Nice write up, but missng some imporant points. Frst, what happened with any team since 1946, 1964, 0r even 1990 means NOTHING. Past few ears, maybe, even then, only if NO hanges have been made. Second and more importantly as the irst paragraph states, BYU had a ropoff not expected ? If a guy is running down the street and you cut off his foo, what will happen ? Ok, put a prothesis on him and continue.... THat is what happened when they lost their QB. Bakup wa not rady, at all, I watch a couple games after that and he is / was slow. Now.. he is playing great...
I like your pick and dont mean to point out, just te bad stff as some is great.. BYU is strong overall team and if this wa the "NEXT game inroation for these two I would be heavy on BYU...
Memphis had one of the easiest shedules ever and that league is really suckin... Telling you, Cinn,.. is bad, beating them means little an there last 5 games.

"AAC co-champ Memphis enters its first bowl since 2008 on a
six-game win skein. The Tigers, who hung tough at nationally-ranked UCLA
(which won by 7) & Ole Miss (which led only 7-3 in the 4th Q), were
sabotaged by a season-high five TOs in their misleading 28-24 home loss to
Houston Oct. 11. Since then, it’s been mostly smooth sailing for the Tigers under efficient 6-7 RS soph QB Paxton Lynch, who set a school record with 28
total TDs (18 passing, 10 rushing) and didn’t throw an interception during
the win streak. With help from productive RB Brandon Hayes (900 YR, 5 TDs)
and a well protecting OL (only 15 sacks), the accurate Lynch (64%) effectively should work play-action vs. a middling BYU defense (25.3 ppg; 21
TDP; only 11 picks), which has had ongoing tackling issues.
Meanwhile, the Cougar arsenal will be hard-pressed to sustain
many drives vs. UM’s suffocating, opportunistic stop unit (17.1 ppg;
27 takeaways), anchored by ubiquitous sr. LB Tanks Jakes (83 tackles, 6
sacks). Yes, BYU’s respected HC Bronco Mendenhall is 6-3 SU in bowls. But
still will support defensively superior Memphis under third-year mentor
Justin Fuente (a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award).
Tigers in a frenzied state to win 10 games for the first time in school
history!"

I watched these teams play numerous times this year and don't really know why BYU is an underdog. Memphis is not that strong and BYU was reaaaaaally good before Hill got injured. BYU should be like -5.5.. that O/U is a pretty good number though, any ideas?

Very hard game to cap. Both teams have played well late in the season but with no real significant wins to gage how good they are. BYU did beat Cal but Cal plays absolutely no defense. BYU I liken to the academy schools as they treat every game like it's a championship and give it there all and play to the final whistle. I think the talent of Memphis wins this 31-24. BoL

Not really sure why everyone is on the under in this game. Both teams are in the top 35 in plays run per game. I see a 38-35 game here. Also, memphis has played a terrible schedule and didnt even play 2 of the top teams in their own conference. Im big on BYU

Memphis looks like the play, but hard to say with the soft sked. Did play both UCLA and Ole Miss tough, which is saying something. Small play on Memphis for me - good luck.

I am undefeated when I post on players. Check my record, latest win was last night taking seattle laying the 9. Best pick was WKY beating Marshall outright. I am not making a pick on this game because I can't figure out if this is a setup. Anyone watching football this year knows that BYU looked good early and seem to put it back together at the end of the year after losing Hill. I live in TN so I see Memphis on a regular basis and I am not that impressed but somehow they win. If I were forced to make a prediction I just couldn't go against the BYU Cougars on this one. Better games on the board so I will pass. This is the 1st time I have posted without a clear winner. Guess this will be my 1st loss if BYU loses.

Heard enough about mephis defense, THEY PLAYED THE 127th ranked schedule so please enough already. And with the 4 game byu losing streak that nobody seen coming,REALLY?? THEY LOST THERE STARTING QB FOR THE SEASON!!!! Who didn't know they were gonna struggle. With all that said this game is a toss up, roll your dice and place your wagers, go cap a better game! Personnaly I'll be playing BYU+2 for a small fun wager!

Memphis has a strong D-Line, which will present problems for BYU. On the offensive side of the ball they can be conservative especially when they get the lead. Memphis is a run first team, which could spell out a low scoring game with lots of punts. I think the under is money, and I am traditionally know as a heavy over player
