Does any of that bother anyone with the line being 3TD's+?
NO QB?.....you bet
UNLV's secondary returns intact......not great but capable of slowing teams down.....last year Zona only 8-21 passing for 81 yds
Many here maybe did like me....and just A-S-Sumed that .........Scroggins/Randall / Brewer would emerge
looks like NONE have.....and Anu Soloman is the guy right now ....WTF.........I made a small bet earlier on Zona....but now I'm gonna wait until the game starts........THEN see how the QB plays *look to bet in-game....or halftime .....UNLV plays hard 1H keeps it close.....but Zona is protecting QB / running fine.....I might hit Zona really hard 2H......their WR's are among the nation's best.....and overall team speed is too..........nice thread A1...........

I'd love to hear your strategies on betting in-game and half time bets Bookie Assassin. Let's talk, (I think I'll just be listening and asking questions) some advanced capping skills. Already I like where you are leading with watching in game and watching closely the skills of QB's starting their first game. I see all these games are capped real closely to the most accurate power ratings (Phil Steele's for example) but what i am wondering is how in the hell they can anticipate QB quality when so many teams are starting over at that very key position.

this is a concern for me as well. in addition, RRod has outstanding WR's available, competent yet unproven QBs, and a great OLine.
I still think this will be a blowout, regardless of who is under center. I just think its a big decision, because sparing Scroggins who is a senior who many thought would be the heir apparent, whichever QB gets the job, will be there for a while. In addition, the guy that won the job last year was competent, but not great. In addition, I think Casteel's D will continue to show improvement this season.
UNLV lost its QB, and star RB. And that competent secondary got torched at times last season.
I still say Arizona is the play, though I wish it were closer to -21.

probably.........this (was) one of my favorite plays as well
BUT > *check out the local news ...the reports are BAD......not just 'a work in progress' kinda thing........QB's are admitting they stink....how often do we hear that? *get out a ruler.....turn to page 249 in Steele mag....under 'last 7 years stats'....draw a line between yrs 2009-2010....(2010 was Hauck's 1st year).....check out the slow/steady improvements in most every category ....O & D....then glance over at road dog #'s......much better for once maybe nation's worst..
sure the new RB/QB is most likely gonna be pretty good......but both unproven....if forced to throw who knows......

I think over 60 is the play in this game. I follow UNLV, so I might be able to provide some insight into his game. Losing Cornett does hurt, he was the all time leading rusher at UNLV. I think Blake Decker (played juco last year) at Qb is an upgrade over Caleb Herring though. Coach Bobby Hauck tried to install a power run game when he first came to UNLV in 2010. I don't need to tell anyone here how that went: 2-10 for three straight years. Last year, the offensive coordinator convinced Hauck to switch to a hybrid spread type attack: the Rebels went 7-6. Phil Steele rates both the OL and Rec as top in the Mountain West. Returning receiver Devante Davis returns after a 1300 yard 14 td 2013. New qb Blake Decker steps into a great situation from the juco ranks. He passed for 4200 yards and 47 tds last year at Scottsdale Community College.

Arizona's WRs are what should cover this game and make it a blowout. They might be the best bunch in the Pac 12. New RB will be fine.
No starter named is either gamesmanship or one of the young guys looking good enough to maybe be worth playing over a 1 and done. But the last 2 one and dones Scott and Denker did well and Scroggins should match them.
I expect a few bubble screens to go for TDs in this one.
But I wouldn't be shocked if they had a 42 point lead and RRod allowed 21 unanswered 4th quarter points for a UNLV cover. Its one of those games.
Take the Cats it might be the best big spread game of the weekend.

Being a Mich. fan I can't stand Rich Rod and reading the writeups on UNLV in the Las Vegas Journal creates just too much bias for me, staying away from this one.
Will say this, UNLV has much more confidence than previous years. They have been summer practicing again in Ely, NV, avoiding the distractions and heat of Vegas. They credit this move for their three road wins last year. They were like 0-22 in previous road games. Last year two AZ scores were pic-6's from QB Nick Sherry. Better QB this time.

the game is interesting...the outcome is highly variable, though I am sure everyone is sure Zona will win...
Carey was a freak of nature, and I think he will be a star in the NFL if he can stay out of trouble...
I think one thing you guys are not considering is UNLV's inability to stop the run. Zona was not the only team that torched them last season on the ground.
I still like Zona ATS, but not as much as I did a few weeks back...

Good Info. I thought Shirley would be the starter.
UNLV has two new starters in the interior DL. Do you think they will be an improvement over last season?

Nick Skerry you mean. Im not sure hes that bad but Caleb Herring had to move back to QB because he sucked. Thought he was good in that opener against Minny 2 years ago but again he lost his job to Herring who had been moved from QB to WR.
Oakster- Is the JuCo confirmed starter?
Im intrigued by the new Ju Co QB just like you are that is some good info on Vegas to think about. If hes the real deal than with Davis back Vegas could put up 20 something which might be enough to cover.
This is probably one of the few times you will be able to know UNLV will play their hearts out. Mid season with the bowl ban that will be a tough team to put money on in the MWC.

Longhorn- I think Josh Shirley, transfer from Washington, has the potential to make an impact right away. He was a monster his freshman year, but seems to have slipped a little every season since then. Brandon Willis transferred over from UCLA. Honestly, I think anything he provides will be gravy. I just don't think he can have the impact that Shirley will. Maybe a fresh start is all these two needed. This year, I anticipate a lot of Rebel games to be shootouts/ high scoring. Unlv may have more talent overall this year, but the record won't reflect that. A 4 or 5 win season is likely.

WestHamUnited couldn't have said it better. With the bowl ban for the APR, UNLV will be tough to back this season, but this game against Arizona is enough motivation for maximum effort. If they can put up 17-21, it will be real interesting.

admit it.....you boys like myself *circled this one when we thought UNLV was ineligible for a bowl
well s-h-i-t-........"this one will be easy.....depressed Rebels will get annihilated here"....then decision reversed......."well it won't matter!....they will still get killed !!".......now Zona has no QB....not because they are all great....but because they can't pick up the O......."I don't care Rebels suck and will get beat up here!!".....
side note: no offense to guilty parties...we all do it Steele is useful for POST SPRING stuff only......you gotta check local news/ team websites..... for UPDATES....that Blake Decker is the starter.....Sr Nick Sherry is a poor fit for the O......but a very solid b/u.....
Ever heard of Shaqulle Murray-Lawrence? ....RB Cornett's replacement.....he has a decent shot to be BETTER *4 carries for 108 vs Minny 4 for 82 vs Zona 3 for 79 vs Fresno...............
WR Devante Davis can start for most anyone
with a very solid OL plus surprising weapons.....UNLV has a very good shot at moving the ball here........

new / unproven guys?
you have to start somewhere......smart way? *focus on teams with the SAME cast returning.....(there are plenty) let others guess......a (reasonable) hunch or two?......sure
SIMPLY........avoid those with uncertainty......like Zona *that 55-21 game......now kinda looks more like 41-24 or so .....to me
My plan here.... *have the game already played out in my pumpkin head........ Zona will struggle early.......Rebels keep it tight 1H........or maybe even leading.........> then Zona 2H....or Zona TT over.....or if UNLV is really moving it (esp on the ground) .......2H over......... ...

I'll be looking forward to it Bookie Assassin. Check out SB Nations college football preview folks, it has interesting write ups on all 128 division 1 teams, Bookie Assassin turned me on to it. I like Phil Steele's college football preview, but that is all it is, a preview. When the season starts it is out of date. I have to give that math nerd credit though, his 2014 plus /power rating on page 33 of his insanely detailed 351 page preview magazine is usually very accurate for predicting opening week lines.

Looking ahead a couple weeks, I've been thinking UNLV moneyline could be a play vs. Northern Illinois. Mostly a fade of NIU - feel that I have a good take on NIU and their QB situation. Reading up here more on the UNLV side, further creates interest in a ML play. Will obviously need to wait and see how both teams look in weeks 1&2.
