Sunday 1-2...Tough loss with UNC Wilmington and a greedy play on the half in the Illinois game. I caught myself watching Illinois/Gardner Webb and felt Illinois was gaining control at the end of the first half and though they would pull away. Played myself right off a winner. Stupid!
Michigan -5.5 (2 UNITS) I am always looking for reasons to fade Mark Gottfried and I think we have one here. I was a season ticket holder for 3 years when Gottfried coached at Bama. There were many things he did well most notably recruiting. However there were always a few things that Gottfried's teams didn't do well. They didn't guard the 3PT. They didn't play good transition defense and they didn't perform well on the road. I always felt Gottfried was better with lesser talent which forced him to coach harder. He is very talented right now and has a terrific staff but many of the things I saw from his Bama teams are creeping into this Wolfpack group.
Facing this Michigan team is going to be a tough chore for NC State. This is a tough minded and very solid defensive group for Michigan. They don't give up second chance points and they play terrific interior defense. They also have Beilein's 1-3-1 defense they can go to with terrific athleticism all over the floor. They don't turn their opponent over at a high rate which works in the favor of NC State but I can see a few more turnovers being forced in what is expected to be a high energy game.
NC State doesn't do a great job of defending the 3PT but just like most Gottfried teams they do a good job in the interior. I think Michigan's guard play is the key here and I think they will get clean looks from deep all night due to Gottfried forcing teams to beat them from the outside. That will be dangerous against a Michgan team that shoots it pretty well and eventually it will open up driving lanes.
Bottom line is that I see this as a coaching mismatch and eventually Michigan will have a run due to NC State going through a scoring drought. They are a good FT shooting team as well which makes this a good play towards the end of the game. Maybe Gottfried has gotten better but watching this team early in the season looks like a lot of his teams that I have seen before. This is my first multi unit play of the year.

Good luck Yacker. Yea I agree with you about Gottfried's tenure at Alabama. One reason I've heard things maybe different at NC State for him is that he brought in a good X's and O's guy in Bobby Lutz as one of his top assistants. Thoughts?

Yeah I mentioned that his staff is better at NC State but its not as much about X's and O's as it is about the attitude his teams tend to play with. This team looks "cool" to me. I was on Oklahoma St against them for that reason. They may play lights out but they will have to prove it to me. I really like the way this Michigan team guards people.
