'Bama was awesome last year. Giving up less than 185 ypg is remarkable in this age of advanced offenses.
My personal favorite is the Miami Hurricane under Jimmie Johnson, not sure what year. Mid '80's? But the "bad to the (wish)bone" defense was the only team that seemed to put a stop to Barry Switzer and the sooners.
Kind of crazy that only 2 coaches have won both a Superbowl and NCAA Championship and that is Johnson and Switzer. However, IMO Barry only finished what Jimmie already started.
Maybe not a top 5 of all-time

the 2001 miami defense with ed reed and the saints linebacker now vima was the best college defense ever... i believe they had over 4 or 5 shutouts that year and beat the hell out on nebraska in the national title game in the rose bowl...every body on that D went in the first round of the draft ...that was the year they were saying that the canes could beat a few NFL teams if allowed to play them..dorsey was the QB and portis was one of a stable of backs...would have won back to back titles but some bad calls vs ohio state the following year stopped that ....they were money vs the spread also.......

don't know about total defense, but the best group of db's has to be the '79 trojans--ronnie lott, dennis smith, jeff fisher, and joey browner.
their offense wasn't too bad either--anthony munoz, bruce matthews, charles white, and marcus allen.

There is something magical about that '91 Huskies defense lead by the great DT Steve Emtman.
FWIW, great examples by each and everyone of you guys whether biased or not.

Washington 1991
USC 2008
Miami 2001
Arizona 1993. Nobody mentions this team, but in 12 games, they gave up an average of 13PPG, and gave up 331 TOTAL rushing yards.

Best all around teams I've ever seen are:
Washington 1991
Miami 2001
USC 2004
USC 2005
Nebraska 1995
I'd put these 5 teams against ANY team from ANY era.
