Fees will kill you.Ebay final sales fee, including a % of your shipping charges now,Paypal fees to get paid etc..
Whatever you're buying at wholesale better be a product that you can pick up at least 50% off retail and desireable to bid on firstly and also relatively cheap to ship.
Not to discourage you, give it a shot and see how it works yourself...And always be specific about EVERYTHING or you will be pounded with stupid -ass questions from some possible bidders. Also limit shipping to US/Canada unless you are familiar with international costs and logistics..
Good luck

Do not buy on Alibaba...the only way that I found to purchase goods in Asia for resale is to have somebody working for you (a trusted local). Developing this kind of contact takes years however. Asia is the land of counterfeit goods. Let the buyer beware.
The above comments about fees are correct. Figure 10% for eBay and 3.3% for PayPal plus store and listing costs. These are starting figures of course. Once you develop certain PowerSeller levels (determined by your customer service and sales totals on eBay) eBay's fees can drop to as low as 5%.
If you cannot keystone a product, don't bother trying to sell it on eBay. I have sold in the ultra-competitive computer component market, and the only way to make money is by getting products on consignment from massive companies such as TigerDirect, Acer, Dell etc...be prepared to ship massive volume on low margin however.
The best way to make money on eBay is to find a niche, and exploit it. The more specific, the better. Of course this is easier said than done. Research products, constantly. Find not what's hot now, but what's going to be hot in the next three months.
Sites like liquidation.com, overstock.com, wholesale.com are retailers claiming to sell you wholesale. For the most part you can buy their products cheaper on eBay!
Anyway, these are just some of my observations after 9 years in the online retail jungle. Trust me it was a lot easier when I started!

Good points all, let me add that since 2008 sellers cannot submit negative feedback to buyers. Talk about a kick in the shorts. So lets get this straight, the sellers, (that pay all of eBay's exorbitant fees BTW) have almost no recourse if a buyer decides to leave negative feedback.
All that said, eBay still has 92 million users. (figures actually taken from the wsj) which means they are a viable candidate to market your product.
If your product is an original, use eBay as cheap advertisement. Link your website to your eBay store and sell the products for 5% less than you would on eBay.
