In his closing remarks during the final
presidential debate of 1980, Ronald Reagan famously asked the American
people: "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"
The table below updates Reagan's question by comparing the state of the
economy in 2000 and 2008. We use 25 indicators of economic well-being
and economic performance and find that 23 of the 25 indicators are
worse in 2008 than they were in 2000. Click here for a list of the sources used.

Of course there is going to be people who are better off, but i would be willing to bet that there are way more people worse off today then they were 8 years ago.
Lets ask all the people who lost their jobs due to their jobs being moved overseas if they are better off. Will know in about 8 weeks if more people are better off now or not

I fortunate enough to be in a job that makes me hard to replace. (It helps knowing more than the person directly above me). I'm about even but underpaid.

RJ - There will always be poor poeple, and what is the definition of poverty? I mean what $ figure is it now?
Poverty used to mean going hungry on a daily basis, no adequate shelter, old clothing with no means of buying new.
Today you can live in a decent house and be working, have electricity, running water, adequate clothing, a cell phone, etc and still be considered living below the poverty level.
Let's help those 37 million by encouraging them to get training in a field that will help them earn more money and then get out of poverty. We should and do as a society help those who can and are willing to help themselves. For those who just want a hand out? Sorry, when your hungry enough, you'll work.

I will be the first one to be politically incorrect here.
Where we ( as a nation ) ARE NOT better off today, is with all the illegals that neither party have the balls to do anything about.
They such up huge amounts of resources, and return very little in return.
YES, the ones that work contribute to SS that they will never collect, but, they take jobs from people who were born here, or are here LEGALLY.
You want to put this country back on track, build the fence, keep immigration, but GO THROUGH THE PROCESS, and get rid of illegals that are currently here.
ALSO HEAVILY PENALIZE companies that KNOWINGLY employ these illegals

So by that reasoning, people were better off in 1992 than in 2000
yes am sorry to burst your bubble but people were doing alot better under the Clinton years.
My point was in 8 weeks we will know if there is more people better off or not. If there is then McCain should breeze to victory. If not then Obama will win. Juts because a bunch of guys on this site are doing better, that doesnt mean more people across the country are? Sometimes i think you really dont get it and then i wonder how the hell you could even began to run your own business

They do the jobs that many will not do. So I guess the problem is the lazy ass people that think they're to good to do that job. They work harder and demand less.

Someone is always willing to do the job.
Every generation, there is a new group that is low man on the scrotum pole
It is good old work ethic that has been lost over the last few generations. That happens when welfare becomes a way of life, rather than a stop gap measure
