After hearing Obama compared to Lincoln today for his statements on gay marriage, and swallowing the tiny bit of puke that emerged as a result, I wondered to my self " self,  why in the world isn't Romney putting a stop to the Obama love wagon?"

All he would have to do is say the following:
" Well, President Obama and I do not agree on a lot of things,  and gay marriage is one of them, I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman.  However, I agree with him that this is not an appropriate thing for the federal government to settle, nor is it something that can be decreed by executive order. I commend the president in observing that constitutionally the executive branch does not have the power to rule over issues of marriage.  I agree with the president that the rules of same sex marriage should be decided by the individual states".

Conservatives = pleased that you stood up for conservative values IE the constitution.
Libertarians = pleased that you agree with the restraint of executive power.
homophobes = happy because they can still move to North Carolina.
Gays = happy because you have the same exact stance (essentially as the president) .
Anyone with a brain = happy because you have made this a non issue, and real issues can be brought up.
Campaign staff= happy, because now they have more time to defend high school attacks from 50+ years ago , and start game-planning for future race baiting, and the hole card IMMIGRATION.

conservative values.  as to that, let me repost this:

nothing gets the rightwing nutjobs fired up like the 5% - 10% of the country's war on marriage.

but can you imagine if a greater percentage of people in this country denigrated this sacred institution by, say, getting divorced, cheating on their spouses, not paying for their children's needs, committing domestic violence or doing any other act that would seem to negatively affect the institution of marriage (although of course, not as negatively as two gay people getting married)?  the sanctity of marriage quacks would be up in arms over this, i'm sure.

as for romney, he's trying to get on the train.

the government shouldn't grant anyone any privileges over the next. Gays aren't fighting for equal rights, they're fighting to share in the bounty of State privilege status

A gay person has all the same rights as any straight person

married people just have more privileges then single people

there will never be peace or agreement on this issue, so long as it is an issue as to who all is to be included in the privileges and who should be excluded from the privileges

you can apply that reasoning to any and every government action

is there anyone more discriminated against than poor drug users? We put those people into cages. Gays seem to enjoy a rather high quality of life. with no fear of persecution. actually, they are a protected class

what do you mean start? i doubt the lefts one trick pony is just going to sneak up on them. It will be very interesting to see what happens with AHA moving forward,,,,,What's Romney going to do, campaign against, his most prominent pet project as a more local level politician? Obamacare is a big issue, rightfully so, i for one am interested as to how these two will work together to ram it down our collective throats. Then we will all live happily ever after, with much better, and cheaper , health care

So then he flip flops and says he's against the Federal Defense of Marriage Act?  Obama Admin is not enforcing DOMA.  Are you suggesting Romney take the same position?  That would a flip-flop and not make his religious righties very happy.

Do you see a difference in flip flopping and evolving?

If you do you're just a sheep.

Hard to argue with your analysis

Great post here... that certain groups of people will get all up in arms trying stop being inclusive... but cant look in the mirror at how marriage is no longer a sacred institution...

because we live in a country that is governed by judeo-christian values

persecution is second nature

but they are not being persecuted against, they just want more

I thought christian values is that they are always the persecuted...

thanks for the answer,  I actually wanted beeasy to answer because I liked his analysis...

but your answer of the theocratic merger of church and state seems accurate also...  It is always interesting how certain groups want a separation  of church and state as our forefathers laid out for america... while other groups of people want a merger of their church and state and basically pissing on their graves...

there's that word "values" again.  and this time it's preceded by a couple of religious words.  please refer to post #2 on that sacred institution of marriage value that the judeos or christians are so desperately trying to protect, or something.

Wrote this on Facebook earlier, in response to a religion hater who has been taking the recent gay news to Tee off on Christians.

I do not like the Govt. telling me who or what I can marry. Isn't the idea to get the govt out of marriage all together? End tax benefits for married people, etc. The govt should not be in charge of a religious sacrament (from the religious standpoint), nor decide who can and can't get married (from a secular standpoint). Religious people arguing for the govt. to ban same sex marriage are in effect arguing for the govt to dictate the legal tenants of their religion. gays begging the govt for permission to marry are vindicating the government and their authority over the civil rights of gays. It is a sick cluster-F of a conundrum. Let's re-direct and take away the federal and state monopoly on matrimony and call it a day. That way I can go back to being a flat earth deity dummy, and atheists can go back to whatever it is atheists do when they are not calling me a moron.

Why is this even an issue?

And for the GOP to even get involved in family values is extremely disturbing.

Like I said... the christian paradigm are always the one's being prosecuted...

I am far from an atheist... personally similar to the OP, I really could care less about this issue (either way) because I dont have a dog in the fight...

But I guess I am for the separation of church and state based on the going against the european divine/absolute/crowned by god monarchy that they fought to revolt against and gain Independence from... So I am not "teeing off" on christians...  I would support the separation of church and state and the basic sentiment of our founding fathers regardless of which religion wanted to make america a theocracy...

btw I like what you posted on fb...

I wish we had more posters like yourself...not based on what you think (as we should all differ as independent thinkers in an independent thinking country)... but how you think...

But as individuals and independent thinkers we will always be outnumbered by the lemmings and more so on this site when partisan lemmings create multiple aliases to appear to agree with themselves and think and talk as a collective "we"...
