Similar conference positioning situation as Tampa and Columbus although to a lesser extent.  Calgary knew they would be in the playoffs for some time, while the Avs had to play their way in.  Grubauer was hot down the stretch and Calgary's goaltending was a platoon situation all year whereas now they are obviously trying to ride with one in Mike Smith, arguably the 1b of the platoon situation all year but the one with the veteran experience and big contract.  The problem is, every time I have watched Calgary and/or had money on them this year when Smith has been in net, he has let in that one soft backbreaker goal to either lose a tight game or halt a possible comeback.  Smith played great in Calgary and the Avs still walked out with a split...I think game 3 was more on par with how Smith's season has gone and I worry that the coaching/management staff in Calgary will have the mentality of going down with the ship instead of making a switch to Rittich if needed, or only when it might already be too late.

The other thing I think about is this is a Colorado team that played Nashville very tough in last year's 1st round when Nashville was all the rage and thought to overmatch the Avs by a long shot.  I also see this Avs team, despite their up and down regular season, as one that has taken a step forward and can build off that round 1 loss.  They have a young core and it's scary to think that Mackinnon is only 23, Rantanen 22, and they could still be getting better.  They were the hottest line for the 1st two months of the season and although they tailed off a bit they seem to be clicking again at the right time which is a big problem for the Flames.  Colorado lost Girard but it's ridiculous to think they could so easily replace him with a similar type, if not more dynamic version, of Dman in Makar.  I think this Avs team is the real deal if the goaltending holds up.

I don't want to discount any of Calgary's playoff experience but they missed last year and don't have the momentum of consecutive years in the playoffs to build on.  Does it matter...who knows, it might.

Contrast everything I said with the frustrating reality that the more I usually write about a topic the more wrong I seem to be lol...

All in all, I'd probably lay off the Flames series line, I think they're in trouble...might have even just convinced myself to take a long hard look at the Avs series line or even series handicap -1.5 if I can find it.

Another night another load of shiit from the NBA...Spurs 100% let Denver cover that spread. Zero effort at the end of the game. Why the phuck even bother playing hard for 36 minutes and lead the whole way to literally hand it to them. So much for the great Pop’s coaching prowess...maybe he should spend more time getting his team to not choke and less time bitching about Trump.

“We are Rome”...wrong dipshit Pop, you are Rome you gutless loser.

Is there a more useless dumbfuck team across all sports...these guys suck hairy ball sack in the playoffs and will never win.  Especially phaggot extraordinaire Kyle Lowry.  POS can't even make a bucket and get a fukkin win on the ML.

How quickly everyone forgets the Caps went down 0-2 games at home against Columbus to open the playoffs last year, and even had to squeak out a nail biter in OT game 3...

They seemed to bounce back alright.

Just calling a spade a spade...tired of this narrative that these "sports" are legit, that these guys are competitive and play with heart, and actually care about their craft.  They don't

Also no sympathy for Marleau....when an organization thinks its wise to give a 3 year deal at a 6.5mil cap hit to a 37 year old....

Don't mind the Marleau contract at all...at the time the plan might have been that he retires in year 3 and they just pay the small penalty towards the salary cap.  They had a boatload of space when they signed him, and the intangibles he brings to the table are immeasurable unlike Nylander as I said above.  The young kids on this team absolutely love him...almost like a 2nd father/extra big brother to Marner and Matthews.

I wouldn't argue with that either lol...a lot of these contracts are a product of timing and luck on the part of either the team or player about when they come up for renewal and when they "breakout" as a star player so to speak.  Pastrnak and Mackinnon other examples of players who signed what turned into a team friendly deals as they have developed into straight up studs!

Should be an interesting summer for a lot of these RFA guys...Marner, Rantanen, Point, Aho...see how much they get paid and what kind of follow-up performance they bring next year.

Fantastic work Professor!  Question though...is the wording "next day" integral to your analysis?  Or is the next game included even if there is a day break in between games?

Curious since the situation for Strategy 1 has occurred 4 times already this season, however on 2 of those occasions there was a 1 day break between the blowout game and the next game.

I agree with most of this, especially the Nylander point.  As a Leafs fan I hated that signing and spent the entire fall season in fear that they would do something stupid like that instead of trading him for a good defenceman.  And he's not even the type of player that brings the "intangibles" to the table that can still be valuable if not producing.  He'll be a disappearing act in the playoffs again.

But it's not even remotely fair to have Weber and Byfuglien on this list and quoting stats from abbreviated games played.  Averaged out to a full season Weber would be a 20 goal scorer and 47 point Dman along with being Mr. Everything for the Habs.  And Byfuglien has only played 40 games and would be on a 60 point pace which is near elite for D today.  The Jets have been lost without him and he'll be a force as usual in the playoffs.  Doesn't matter that they're both mid-30's so "not getting better", as long as they can keep their play steady for another few years they're still quality players and their teams MVP's.

I also fell for this bait and switch of the 9.5 total when neither of these teams have scored jack shiit this year...

This thing ain't going over, just turned it on to watch in the 4th...Tigers leave 2 stranded in scoring position striking out swinging at ridiculous pitches.  Yankees go a quick 3 up 3 down with first 2 striking out on 3 pitches and 3rd batter attempting to bunt and pops up.  These guys suck dikk and wouldn't care about winning or playing well even if they didn't suck dikk in the dugout all day long.

He goes home and slays Cate Upton every night...you think he gives a shiit about baseball?  None of these "athletes" do.
