NBA betting returned to the odds board over the past couple weeks, as the league figured out a 22-team format to finish the 2019-20 season, with a tentative July 30 restart. But there won’t be any home-court advantage factored into the NBA Championship odds, since all games are taking place at Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex.
Oddsmakers with The SuperBook at Westgate and BetMGM talked NBA Finals odds and where the money is coming in, as teams prepare to resume this most unique season.
Who are people betting to win the NBA championship?
“We’ve seen significant betting on the Nuggets, 76ers and the Celtics,” SuperBook manager Derek Wilkinson said. “Most of the betting on the Sixers and Celtics is due to the news that neither Kevin Durant nor Kyrie Irving will play for the Nets the rest of the season.”
Boston has the shortest odds of those three teams, at 16/1, followed by Philadelphia at 20/1 and Denver at 25/1.
On the flip side, BetMGM is drawing dollars on the more predictable outfits.
“It’s the same as usual, with the Lakers and Clippers seeing the majority of the money. Very little for the Bucks,” BetMGM vice president of trading Jason Scott said.
BetMGM has the Lakers as +250 favorites to win it all, with Milwaukee a +280 second choice and the Clippers third at +325.
Which teams present the most liability to win the NBA Finals?
With such a long delay due to the COVID-19 shutdown, there was speculation that Brooklyn might get a huge boost. Not only would the layoff potentially allow Irving to return from shoulder issues, but Durant could make his Nets debut, returning from a torn Achilles suffered in the 2019 Finals while with Golden State. That prospect led to significant betting on the Nets.
“We have seen consistent speculative money on Brooklyn, likely based on the possible return of Durant,” Scott said. “That return was unequivocally ruled out this week, so I expect that money to dry up.”
So while BetMGM has liability to Brooklyn, the 50/1 shot is quite unlikely to cause any problems for the book. Meanwhile, at The SuperBook, Wilkinson said the Lakers – +250 co-favorites with the Bucks – still present the most liability, followed by the Trail Blazers (80/1) and Celtics (16/1).
Which NBA props are being bet?
The NBA prop bet menu is rather limited at some books and nonexistent at others, with several markets canceled due to the league not playing a full 82-game regular season. But The SuperBook came up with an interesting market: Which team will land the eighth and final playoff seed in the Eastern Conference, and which team will do likewise in the Western Conference.
“Not a lot of action, but we have seen a few bets on the Magic for the East and the Spurs for the West,” Wilkinson said, noting San Antonio is a hefty 50/1 to nab the West’s final playoff spot.
