Patrick's Weekly SuperContest Blog:
I’m at three consecutive weeks of nonlosing records in the SuperContest – barely. In Week 5, I squeaked out a 2-2-1, thanks to the Texans pushing in a 3-point overtime win against the Cowboys on Sunday night. I’ll take that!
So I’m now at 12-11-2 on the season, keeping my head above the .500 waterline.
Again, one part of my revamped strategy – after going 2-7-1 the first two weeks – is looking closely at home favorites of 3 points or less. It worked great last week with the Chiefs, not so much with the Eagles, and of course there was the push with Houston.
So it’ll still be part of the mix for Week 6, along with a couple short home underdogs. On to the picks:
Dolphins +3 vs. Bears: Miami was a 6.5-point underdog at Cincinnati last week and led 17-0 early in the second half. The Fish were still up 17-3 at the end of the third quarter. Then they gave up 24 unanswered points. No outright win, and worse, no cover either. Here’s hoping the Dolphins are peeved and ready to play, getting 3 points at home.
Redskins -1 vs. Panthers: Carolina needed a last-second, 63-yard field goal at home to beat the Giants last week. And we all saw Thursday night just how bad the Giants are – with the exception of Saquon Barkley. So I like the Redskins simply needing to win at home to guarantee me at least a push.
Bengals -2.5 vs. Steelers: Cincinnati is another short favorite at home, against a Pittsburgh team that maybe found itself last week, or maybe not. It’s a great chance for Cincy to prove it’s for real. I’ll take that chance and ride with the Tigers.
Titans +2.5 vs. Ravens: This is more a matter of not trusting Baltimore. The Ravens scored 27 and 26 points, respectively, in wins over the Broncos and Steelers. Then they got a whopping 9 points in an overtime loss at Cleveland last week. Gimme the home ‘dog getting 2.5 points.
Patriots -3.5 vs. Chiefs: I’m outside of my 3-point comfort zone, so no chance for a push in this game. But I think Kansas City, awesome as it has been this season at 5-0 SU and ATS, is due for at least a little regression. And New England has been solid the past couple of weeks. I’ll go with Belichick and Brady, at home and under the Sunday night prime-time lights.
Here’s hoping those five plays will at least net me a 3-2 mark, which might just get me into the top 1,000 in the SuperContest field of more than 3,1000 entrants. Watch this space for a new Supercontest video of each week’s picks and an update of the blog.
