@vetdrm Great.....I haven't been there since they renovated the place, but drove past there a few weeks ago and it looks great. There are a lot of good shows, so we'll go. Dead & Company invading my Wrigleyville neighborhood last night and tonight. It's like 1967 around here. |

@Midnight1 Horrible for the horse and Saez. After the horses died at Churchill, the anti-horse racing bunch, like the LA Times will be out in force. After the Belmont when TC season is over, we'll hear nothing until next year's Derby week. |

7) Blazing Sevens……Does anyone believe in a Wiseguy horse anymore? If so, I guess the Chad Brown trained colt might qualify, although a live 9-2 odds doesn’t look Wiseguy to me. Money being poured on him looks more like dollars spent on trying to beat Mage rather than trying to win the race. Sort of a comparison to a good defense beating a good offense? The Champaign Stakes winner in slop is the goods, but he just hasn’t hit stride as a 3-year old. This will be his 6 venture into graded competition in 7 lifetime races. If the animal is going to graduate from a potential pretender, then today is the day. Backers will note his closing potential, but he will have some company in the likes of Mage and Route. Irad handles the chores and I think he can figure with the right path and the way things might set up.
My Picks:
#3 Mage to win #5 Red Route One…..small bet to win; $40 place
$16 exacta straight: 3-5 $10 exacta straight: 3-1 $8 exacta straight: 5-3 $4 Tri: 3/1,5/1,5,6,7 $1 tri: 5/1,3/1,3,6,7

3) Mage….Want me to stop here? Race over? Not so fast, Mister. Even with some possible gate trouble, we saw in L’vlle how he can run em’ down. He will have plenty of speed to follow and needs to hit the second gear if National Treasure explodes. It would help Mage if Treasure got into a big speedball with Coffee in the .22’s with the two front runners cancelling each other out near the end. Perhaps Mage should be concerned with those who will be flanking him, especially Red Route One, who should relish the distance, and the potentially improving Blazing Sevens. While I think Mage wins the race, Red Route One should scare Mage backers as the One with the potential of Blazing Sevens as a closer looming. Just four career starts doesn’t scare me, but make no mistake, Mage is still learning and on this quirky track school is in session. The “good news” is that he is 2-1, not 3-5, live odds as of 11am Eastern. 4) Coffeewithchris…..This horse sort of reminds me of the guys I hang out with at the bar who said, “Let’s put up $1000 each and buy a horse.” At the age of 3, Chris has already run 12 times, including 4 times in 2023. Oyoyoy! With all of his career races in Maryland, his lone Pimlico race came at age 2 in a five horse field where he earned a 27 Beyer. However, I am not going to denigrate his accomplishments as the son of Ride on Curlin (Curlin) is 9/3-3-0. No graded stakes experience, but he did finish a respectable 5 just 2-1/2L out in the Tesio. Decent Beyer’s in the 80’s and a jock-trainer combo of 33% wins in 15 races. His biggest chance is to go to the lead, which he might be able to do, but he is going up against National Treasure in vying for it. Chris has never won past a mile, so this is a real test. A win not likely, but he’s getting some backing with 8-1 live odds as of 11.00 Eastern. Not sure he can get a piece, but stranger things have happened, Mr. Rich Strike. 5) Red Route One…..Gun Runner’s boy out of a Tapit mare, the colt has six graded stakes on his resume, including the Arkansas Derby (6, 5-1/2L out) with second place finishes in the Rebel and Southwest. Pretty darned good going up against Angel of Empire, Forte, Two Phil’s and other hotties competing well. Blasted at the end of his last race to come from behind to tie his best Beyer, 92, in a solid prep for this one. Rosario and Asmussen combo is dynamite and this is a horse that just might put on his dancing shoes today. The extra panels will be to his liking and I think he’ll get a pace. Don’t dismiss a dual between RR1 and Mage, and maybe Blazing Sevens, at the end. In my mind, he might be the only one that can beat Mage. A must play in exotics. Consider putting a few bucks on him to win. 6-1 odds live from 10-1 ML, so the betting public is picking up. 6) Perform……Ever heard of Good Magic? Of course. This guy and Mage have the same pappy, Good Magic, so pay attention. Trainer Shug must think a lot of Perform’s potential to enter him here, the colt’s first graded stakes. Why not? He broke his maiden two back and followed it up with a win in the Tesio hitting an 85 Beyer. DRF notes say the pace isn’t favorable to him, but I think McGaughey knows that and will be prepared to sit chilly and measure the temperature. He’s on the improve with a sound piece not out of the question. |

Some people are throwing their hands in the air about this race because of the relatively short field (now 7 horses; maybe another one or two scratched—SEE MIDNIGHT’S Preakness notes). The possibility of a 3-5 fave (Mage), especially since First Mission is out, a real contender in National Treasure with some players skeptical of this being just his second race outside of California, and a few that look like they couldn’t handle the undercard, let alone the 2 leg of the Triple Crown.
Here we go. 1) National Treasure……Let’s start with Bafffffffffert, a now scary verb among those who no longer trust him. He trains this outstanding, but somewhat underachieving son of the great Quality Road. Transferred back to the Baffert barn from Tim Yakteem, can the grey-haired guru get the lad on track? He hasn’t won since his maiden finishing with a bland record since with two 3 place finishes, a fourth and a second. Yawn me. However, take note that his fourth place finish in his last race, the Santa Anita Derby, was just 2-3/4L behind winner Practical Move, a horse that might have gone off as the second or third fave in the Ky. Derby to Forte (had he run). The SA Derby was a knife fight and I will give National Treasure points for sticking with the winner, as well as Mandarin Hero and Skinner, until the end. I’m going to say he improved in the SA after earning his second best Beyer. Can he win? Yes he can, especially if Mage has his “normal” problems out of the gate and needs to run 2 miles to get 1-3/16. Keys: Get out quick, take the lead at once staving off, perhaps, Coffewithchris, then run and hide with Mage, Red Route One and Blazing Sevens likely breathing down his neck. Treasure’s only other race outside of California was the BC Juve at Keeneland where he ran a formidable third to Forte. Blinkers on, a tactic in which the trainer has been a winner 17% of the time. Johnny V rides. 2) Chase the Chaos……50-1, now at 7-1 live odds as of 11.00am Eastern Time. Mmmmmmmm? The Mine That Bird crowd must have chartered a flight to Baltimore. He’s done his best work on synthetic and turf with his lone dirt run a mess finishing nearly 17L out in the San Felipe. Some of us, including ME, diluted the chances of Two Phil’s in the Ky. Derby because he seemed to be more of a synth horse than a dirt horse. I won’t make that mistake again, but I just can’t see Chaos winning after losing his last two by a combined 24L. A bit of a curious switch from Ayuso to Russell in the leather for trainer Mogers, but the record stands, so the change is warranted. His second venture into graded stakes. I ain’t feelin’ it for this guy, not even for a piece.

With all of the scratches from the field, including FORTE, keep in mind that some horses move into gate positions toward the rail Note, for the horse that will be in the 17 hole after scratches: Looking at the history of the race, the post is a killer considering that the position is 0 for 43 in Derby starts. In fact, the post has yielded just one second place (Forty-Niner in 1988) and two 3 place finishes, a 7% in-the-money rate. Right now it appears to be Mandarin Hero, but check this out after all scratches are announced. MY PICKS: Tapit Trice to win and place $16 exacta box: 2, 5, 17 $8 exacta: 2, 5, 17/6, 8, 14, 22 $4 exacta: 6, 8, 14, 22/2, 5, 17 $2 tri: 2,5,17/2,5,8,14,17,22/2,5,6,8,11, 14, 17, 21,22 .10 cent Super: 2,5,17/2,5,6,8,14,17, 21,22/2,5,6,8,11,14,17, 21,22/1,2,5,6,8,11,14,17, 21,22 |
